First off let me assure you the List is functioning. Second, please note the correct spelling of Charleston.
Diane - Back in the early 1990s when I lived in Charleston, one of the local societies did a group visit to Barbados. They explored the links between the two areas. I don't recall if it was the SC Historical Society or the Huguenot Society - but if you write to the SCHS, they would probably know who it was, if it wasn't them. I"m sure whoever spearheaded that effort will have lots of info for you on the connection between the two. ----- Original Message ----- From: Diane Graham <meregra@avalon.net> To: <SCCHARLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 24, 2000 8:19 PM Subject: [SCCHARLE] Barbados to Charlston > Hello all, > > I am interested in the early Charlstonians who were first in Barbados. > Is there anyone here who also has ancestry that fit that pattern of > immigration? > > > > > > > Diane in Iowa, USA > mailto:meregra@avalon,net > http://www.genweb.net/~meregra (genealogy web page) > icq# 8679306 > > > > ==== SCCHARLE Mailing List ==== > Lots of holdings on Charleston County Families > South Carolina Historical Society > http://www.schistory.org >
Diane, I have been researching the Cantey/Canty family for about 8 years and have about 45900 names in my databse of Cantey/Canty's and related families. They came from Ireland to Barbados then to Charleston. From there they have spread out across the US first to Ga, Ala, La , and then others. Diane, Still searching for family in Charleston, but lots of us also subscribe to the huguenot-L@rootsweb.com since the names are very prevalent in both. Which surnames are you hunting for? Jean
I did the same thing so I guess it is working. My PARIS (Parris/Pearis) family came to Charlston from Barbados in approximately 1710. Paris Island got its name from this family. Is anyone else interested in this surname? Diane in Iowa, USA mailto:meregra@avalon,net http://www.genweb.net/~meregra (genealogy web page) icq# 8679306
Hello all, I am interested in the early Charlstonians who were first in Barbados. Is there anyone here who also has ancestry that fit that pattern of immigration? Diane in Iowa, USA mailto:meregra@avalon,net http://www.genweb.net/~meregra (genealogy web page) icq# 8679306

Hello! If anyone is interested, I have a copy of a cookbook from 1960 which was published by Heathwood Hall School Parents Guild. It has the married names of the contributors, plus, in parentheses, their maiden names. I would be glad to do lookups for anyone who has families from Columbia. Some of the most recognizable names for me are Simons, Gibbes, Lumpkin, Ligon, Stoudenmire, Johnson, DeLoache, Zeigler, Myers, Manning, Matthews, Moore, Finley, Heyward, Boykin, Hopkins, Dent, Jumper, Smith, Seabrook, Benet, Izard, Douglass and Douglas, Guignard, Curry, Clarke, Efird, Bailey, Hampton, Graydon, and Mrs. James F. Byrnes (Maude Busche). There are MANY more. I'm going to try to type them all out in a separate document, but will do lookups in the meantime. I'll even give you a recipe they sent in, if you like. I also have a second revision (1984) of the original Trinity Episcopal Church (Edisto Island) cookbook, which also has some Charleston family names and recipes. By the way, my aunt, Mary Frances (Wilkinson) Meade was the secretary of the church at that time, and typed this entire cookbook on an old, electric typewriter. No computers in the church then! Maggee, Sorry for the typo, the man's name is Walter J. Fraser, Jr. Jean
Maggee, I just received a book called Charleston, Charleston "The History of a Southern City" by Wlater J. Fraser, Jr. which documents the epidemics pretty well, from typhoid to smallpox to yellow fever. Maybe this book would help if you can find access to a copy. Jean
Does anyone know anything of the history of this place--Etiwan Phosphate Works? Besides the usual information and statistics, I am especially interested in knowing if it was run as a plantation, with an overseer, etc...And did anyone take up residence there? I am trying to figure out why one of my ancestors' children died there... Thanks so much, Maggee Smith
I was wondering if there is a published list of any epidemics to hit Charleston since about 1800? Does anyone know of something like this? Maggee Smith
Rhita...when you visit the Christ Church Historical Society next month would you be so kind as inquire if they have a publication list? If so , how we may get a copy. Thank you so much.....Betty
Rhita, Do you live in Mt.Pleasant? If you do you are my sister's neighbor! Maybe not so close but a neighbor just the same. She lives in the old village-I think.
