    1. Re: [SCCHARLE] Mary Ann Girardeau : GIRARDEAU SURNAME
    2. Edward L. Manigault
    3. CJK: I'm beginning to wish I had never started with the Axson line. I have Samuel and Elizabeth You m. March 1, 1787 and one child, Elizabeth, b. 1790. Also two other sons, Edward and John of undated births. I have their? son, Jacob, b. May 27, 1795, a month after Samuel's marriage to Mary Ann in April, 1795. ??? OK, so if Jacob was the son of Mary Ann, he would have been born just a month after her marriage to Samuel. If Elizabeth You and Samuel m. Dec. 2, 1800, were Elizabeth (b. 1790) and Jacob (b. 1795) the children of Mary Ann, or who? Help, anyone? I will post my Girardeau line in a separate message. Edward

    3. CJK: Your evidence does seem to point to an error. I have Mary Ann Girardeau Axson as the widow of General Richard Withers Vanderhorst by whom she had at least four children from Aug., 1816 to April, 1820. "However", if I have her death date correct as April, 1821, she obviously could not have married Dr. Gadsden in 1842. So the correct wife seems to be Mary Ann Gibbes, widow of John Axson. Question: was her name "Gibbes" or "Gibbs"? I don't know her parents. Now: Unfortunately, I have her married to two John Axsons, one (the son of Samuel and Elizabeth You) b. abt 1794, and the other (the son of William and Susannah Mouzon) b. 1764 and the widower of Mary Ann (Archer?). The Dec., 1919 marriage date seems to be about right for either "husband". Does anyone know the correct "John" for this Mary Ann Gibbes? 3. Rosalieanne, No, I have not checked with the St. Lawrence people yet. I did check there several years ago. My Rev. Patrick O'Neill bought a lot for 8-10 people and then buried only one person there, or so the records and marker attest for that spot. However, I have gotten additional information and really should check again. Thanks for the names of the ones to contact. These deaths were in the 1850's and I don't believe they used a funeral home back then. The Diocese has been most helpful, but they don't have any information for what I'm seeking. What is the ESDA base? That sounds promising... 1. [SCCHARLE] St. Patrick's Catholic Church info.
    2. Julie O. Perkins
    3. I am related to the first priest appointed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Rev. Patrick O'Neill, of Kilkenny, Ireland. At least, I'm trying to prove my connection to him. I am seeking deaths and burials of my ancestor, his brother, Thomas O'Neill, about 1859. Patrick served in Charleston from 1838 - 1865. I know that two of their sisters were with Patrick in 1850 and 1860 and served as witnesses for marriages he performed. Another brother, Walter, is buried at St. Lawrence, having died in 1859 and been buried there by Patrick, though there are no death records for him at the church. My grandmother came to Charleston in the 1960's and was told by someone that her ancestors were buried "under the church". We didn't know exactly what that meant and subsequent research in Charleston, both at the church and at the Diocese, drew blanks. However, I have recently corresponded with a descendant of the architect of the 'new' sanctuary of St. Patrick's, built in 1888 following the earthquake, and he said that the church was built on a floating foundation and that he had seen a cemetery below the church, complete with tombstones. This was done by order of the bishop at that time. Isn't that fascinating? I don't believe that many people there in Charleston know about this. I wonder if those graves are even documented in the church records? Could my missing Thomas O'Neill and his wife be there? How would I go about trying to gain access to this cemetery? Does anyone out there have any knowledge of this or advice on how to proceed? I'm ready to take a big flashlight, some bat deterrent and head for Charleston and St. Patrick's tomorrow! However, I am aware of the sanctity of the location and the sensitivity with which some might view this information. When I was there a few years ago, I met the church historian, named Joan Mack. The e-mail address I had for her no longer works. The priest was new. I am anxious to be advised... Julie O'Neil Perkins Coweta Co., Newnan, GA

They had my gggrandfather on the records but none of the others. I do know they are there by the death certs but the church has no records. Have you been in touch with Mary Giles with the diocese? She was most helpful to me on a burial at St. Lawrence. Her e-mail is mgiles@catholic-doc.org Pat "Julie O. 1. Re: [SCCHARLE] Catholic Miscellany; St. Lawrence Cemetery
    2. Hi Daniel Re Catholic Death Records in Catholic Miscellany Newspaper and the St. Lawrence Cemetery. Here is the address for Catholic Diocese of Charleston http://www.catholic-doc.org/ (includes a history of Catholics in early Charleston) and here is the E-Mail address of the Church Archivist - Mary Giles mgiles@catholic-doc.org Several years ago the Diocese replied to my query re wedding and funeral of my Irish ancestor. Luckily, the 1843 wedding notice had been printed in the Newspaper - the actual church records of St. Mary's had been destroyed along the way The Diocese also had the funeral notice plus lot number for his burial at St. Lawrence Cemetery. St. Lawrence is not an individual church graveyard. Rather a large cemetery set aside for members of the Catholic faith - right next door to Magnolia (Protestant) Cemetery and across the street from Bethany (Lutheran) Cemetery. Several others smaller cemeteries complete this "Cemetery Row"- which was started after the individual church graveyards filled up. Good luck in your research. Mary Alice

    3. I have Fisher Gadsden (Oct 25, 1805-Jan 13, 1870; baptised Nov 22, 1805 at St. Philip's, Charleston) as the fourteenth of sixteen children of Philip Gadsden II (1761-Feb 6, 1824) and Catherine Edwards (1766-Mar 17, 1814) who were married Nov 19, 1783; both of Charleston. Fisher's older brother, Christopher Edward Gadsden was elected minister of St. Philip's in 1810 and was Bishop of SC from 1840 to 1852. Brother John was Intendant of Charleston and US District Attorney, and brother James was US Minister to Mexico. I have that Fisher married Laura E. Michau, daughter of Abraham Michau and Mary Stead Allston, (died 1807); and a note that Fisher had thirteen children. Source of much of the above from the St. Philip's Parish Register 1754 to 1810, and if I remember correctly a paper of family records, will have to check. Since this is not in may direct family line, I have not recorded all my sources in the database as yet. I hope this helps a little. I may have a bit more if you need anything specific.
