Is there any type of city directory for 1753? I have tried to find passenger lists for the ship Elizabeth, which came from Rotterdam to Charleston on February 3, to no avail. I'm looking for the country of origin of Thomas KICKELAYTERor KICHELITER, which later became KICKLIGHTER or KICKLITER. Any information would be most appreciated - as well as suggestions as to where to search! Gloria Marquis

Is there anyone who might be looking thru the 1850-1860 Charleston city directories or censuses that could check for a Sarah Prince who died September 1865 in Charleston? She might be listed with Henry Hyams/Hymes who married Christina/Celestine? Humes of Charleston , Rebecca Hyams/Hymes who married Samuel Marco of Charleston/Darlington, SC or Hyam Hyams/Hymes who married Caroline Elizabeth Rugg of Darlington, SC, as she was their mother. Once the Hyams moved to Darlington SC around 1861 they spelled their name Hymes. She also had children Leah Louise Prince , who married Alex Fineberg and Samuel Prince. Apparently, she married Mister Hyams in England. We assume he died and she then remarried George Prince. George Prince deserted her and came to America. She followed him, with her children, and sued him for child support. I am assuming she came to Charleston because Henry, Hyam and Rebecca, all siblings, were there in the 1850s and in 1850 Hyam would have been about 22 years old. I believe he was the oldest child. I ran across this information in a file in Darlington Historical Society. There was no source listed nor a name stating who put it in the file. I found these name listed in the Magnolia Cemetary online. Perhaps they will help someone out there. Does anyone connect to these persons? RE family name of DROZE in the Charleston City Directories for 1849 and 1850's. Hi Rosalieanne Several years ago, I reviewed microfilmed copy of 1856 Charleston City Directory -- and found the family name of DROZE on Cannon Street. Do you know if this was the 8th Ward? I would really appreciate your checking for this name in 1849 and early 1850's. My goal - to find the parents of my known ancestor who died in July 1864 in Civil War - Isaac Daniel Droze (abt 1830-1864). He is listed on 1860 US Census together with wife (Eugenia Sigwald) and three of four sons - living in the 8th Ward of Charleston, SC. Thanks so much. Mary Alice
Rosalieanne and I have common ancestors that lived at 39 and 41 Meeting Street. 39 Meeting street was the Horry House, purchased by our BARBOT Ancestors in 1853. The house number later changed to 59 Meeting. It is at the corner of Meeting and Tradd streets. Beautiful house--sold for about $1.4 Mil in 1994 or thereabouts. I have color pictures of it and it has been faithfully restored or kept up to look the same as it did when the Barbot's lived in it in the 1800's (comparing written descriptions to the pictures). In the 1880 census there were 23 people in the house!! Three generations! But four generations were lucky enough to have it as their home before it was sold about 1881. I am not as familiar with 41 Meeting street. It was a separate Barbot residence from about 1866 thru 1891. The next time(s) that particular Barbot ancestor is listed in the city directories, 1892 and 1894, the number is listed as 65. Must be when the numbers changed...I have only searched to 1894. So--who were their neighbors???? Maggee Smith
Hi' I know that some of my ancestors were from St. Johns Parish of Charleston, ST. Pauls, and St. Stephens , St. Andrews. Not sure where some of these parishes are. this would be between 1719 and 1850. Their last names are Haig and one Gt. grandfather was Col Hezekiah Maham of Santee. I know that a couple of the Haig family was from Santee, but I do not know the parish. Would you mind looking at your St. James for me? The wives would be Elizabeth Witsell, Agnes Richie, Anne Marr, Mary Maham . Elizabeth Haig. Maybe their side of the family could have been from the St. James Parish. Just taking a chance. I do appreciate it. Do you know how I could obtain a church record from any of the above? Thanks Betty
Hi listers: I just ordered St. James Santee Plantation Parish, History and Reocords 1685-1925 in the hopes I might find my Huger/Johnson/Kennedy/Finley connection. Will be more than happy to look up specifics for anyone who cannot access this book. I will post to the board when it is received and you can email me your names. Still hunting: Huger, Johnson, Finley, Kennedy, Dutart connections. Jean Faulk

Rosalieanne, Thank you for looking up these O'Neill's for me. You see, I believe I am related to Rev. Patrick O'Neill, who pastored St. Patrick's from 1838 - 1865, when he died. Of course, I would not be _directly_ related to him, since he was a Catholic priest. :) However, I believe it is through his brother, Thomas, whom I have not been able to document in Charleston, though other siblings are found there. Sisters of theirs, Elizabeth and Anastasia, are found with Patrick in 1850 and 1860 censuses. Brother Walter is found in them St. Lawrence Cemetery. Oral history says that Thomas died about 1855 and is possibly buried beneath the present St. Patrick's. So, I'm trying to find him through city directories. Another possible brother, John, lived on Morris Street. I have a downtown city map, but I'm not sure where the locations are in relation to each other. Any and all O'Neil's, of any spelling, I would appreciate having for whatever years. Can I repay you for your time? Were there a Col Maham on Meeting Street. He had a daughter who married into the Haig family. These would be grandparents. Thanks Betty
Hi, Could you do a look-up on the 1850 city directory for my elusive great-great grandfather. Thomas A. Johnson. Lived at 39 Spring St in the 1880's but not sure about the 1850's. Two daughters born then, Alice Z. born 1852 and Rebecca F. born 1854. Wife's name was Rebecca Finley Kennedy who has also proved very elusive. Any little tidbit I can find will maybe help me tie these folks together with someone. Thanks in advance. Jean Faulk

Are there Charleston City Directories for the 1850's? I have some pages that were graciously copied for me from the 1820's and then the 1870's; I'd really like my surname for the 1850's. Any volunteers? Julie O'Neil Perkins researching: O'Neill's of Charleston in 1850's, particularly related to St. Patrick's Catholic Church
Edward....don't give up on them....if they give you a fit....imagine what they do to those with less experience who are just trying to get them beyond the Parish register. Think I will go in search of the Transaction articles next to see what can be found there. Betty
Edward , I am with you regarding the Axsons , I have been trying to put all of them in their right order for years and when I think I have them right there is allways something that does not fit. I have abt 150 Axsons and some of them I call my dangling ancesters ( LOL) . Sometimes , I think , just leave it and forget about them, but I can't stand not having them in the right order , so I allways go back to them. The only thing I know for sure is from my Grandmother Jessie I Axson , her father William C Axson, his farther Robert K Axson , his father Robert S Axson , his father Jacob Axson( married Ann Bee ) his father William 1739, after this I start getting confussed. When I go to her mother's side of the family it seems to be easier, thank goodness. There seems to be a lot of information, but putting it all in the correct order. I feel will take me and my descandants forever and then we still won't be sure. Don't quit on me I need the Help. CJK
