    1. [SCCHARLE] BRABHAM Grand Reunion to Visit Charleston and Islands
    2. Douglas/Ungaro
    3. African American BRABHAM Grand Reunion Continues in Denmark, SC 1-4 July, VOORHEES College Reunion Heads to CHARLESTON and SEA ISLANDS 4th of JULY - Cousin Judy Brabham writes and tells me she heard long-distance about our African American BRABHAM Family reunion in Denmark, SC. >From the ORANGEBURG TIMES AND DEMOCRAT news - July 1, 2, or 3, 2000 The article also mentions good ol' BUFORD'S BRIDGE. I believe that's the old name for BAMBERG, SC, which I deliberately passed through back in 1979. I remember I took a photo of orange tiger lilies in a field. The following is from the article: "DESCENDANTS OF SLAVES FROM BUFORD'S BRIDGE PLAN GRAND REUNION" "More than 200 descendants of slaves from the Brabham Plantation of Buford's Bridge will converge upon Denmark this weekend for a highly anticipated grand reunion they hope will be the first of many.... " More from the African American BRABHAM Reunion article: "Sojourner-Simmons said the search for all branches of African-American Brabhams descending from the plantation has been successful and the family is "going to keep in touch" with those who will be unable to attend the weekend event." "Brabham-Bookhart, whose paternal great-grandfather, James, was born on the plantation in 1818, said the search - even conducted over the Internet - has yieled results." "Buford's Bridge, the oldest community in Bamberg County, holds several hundred years of history including what was once a sprawling slave plantation. Established in the late 1770's, the pre-Civil War settlement of Buford's Bridge is located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 301 and 302 south of Bamberg." "Reunion activities will include a welcome and reception at Massachusetts Hall on the campus of Denmark's Voorhees College Saturday, July 1. Sunday worship services will be held 11 a.m. at Honey Ford Baptist Church in Denmark, followed by dinner. A family picnic is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Rivers Bridge Park in the Buford Bridge community. A banquet, featuring Denmark native and University of South Carolina black history professor Dr. Cleveland Sellers as speaker, is planned for 8 p.m. Monday at Massachusetts Hall." "On July 4, the family plans to take a trip to the sea islands near Charleston where many slaves went before migrating to the North." Thanks to Mr. Joe Jones in Orangeburg SC for sharing this text. 3. J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. (since 1865) 232 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401 843-723-2524 James A. McAlister. Inc 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407 843-766-1365 McAlister-Smith 150 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC 29401 843-722-8371 W. M. Smith Funeral Homes 2 Radcliffe Street, Charleston, SC 29401 843-722-3676 The only information I have on the Smith Funeral Home is that it has been in operation for a very long time. Several years ago the McAlister Funeral Home, which had been in existence for several generations of that family, split. One of the younger McAlister family members formed a new business on Savannah Highway. The old McAlisters took in a new partner named Smith (from upstate) and remained in operation at their familiar location on Wentworth Street and a branch East of the Cooper in Mt. Pleasant. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that the old records would have remained at the Wentworth Street location. As for records at Stuhr's, some may have been lost in a fire. I seem to recall there was a terrible fire at their location in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Not real sure about that. Hope this helps. linda mhoose@sc.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <SUMR897@aol.com> To: <SCCHARLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 03, 2000 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [SCCHARLE] grasping at straws ....PLEASE HELP > Hi.....I have heard during my research that Smiths was one of the original > funeral homes. 2. Hi Bill Nell Thanks so much for checking for Droze in 1849/50 Charleston City Directory. and finding the listing of Catherine Drose (Droze). She is also on 1850 Census as Head of Household including son Isaac. Catherine might be the mother/aunt of my known ancestor Isaac Daniel (1860 Census). Thanks again for taking the time and interest to look up the names of "our ancestors". Mary Alice

    3. Thanks for you kind words, Elizabeth; It nice to be appreciated. I probably will never say "no" to anyone. But, it may take me a while to get to answering. The more specific (Date, Person) the question, the quicker the response. I really enjoy being part of this exchange of information.
