    1. [SCCHARLE] St Philip St Party:TOOMER & HONOUR
    2. John Bowen III
    3. Julie Thanks for sharing your St Philip families. Have not run across your family names except for TOOMER and HONOUR. I have the biography of Anthony Toomer Porter, the Episcopal minister and founder of the Porter Military Academy. His mother was Ester Ann Toomer, the daughter of Anthony Toomer. In researching my Renneker and Blum uncles' activities during the Civil War, I have noted several Honours who served in the Washington Light Infantry. John

    1. [SCCHARLE] street party
    2. Tony and Julie Howell
    3. good morning john - welcome to the charleston list. there are a lot of really good folks on this list. my connection to st. phillip street is as follows: my 2G grandfather, John Elliott Thames was born in clarendon co, sc in Dec 1823 and died in clarendon, sc on Dec 26, 1893. on nov 1, 1848 he married Anna Rosina Caroline Joye who was born in charleston on Sep 20, 1829. they were married by the Reverend J. H. Honor (spelled Honour later on in the family bible.) Anna was the daughter of Peter Sieversten Joye, b aug 9, 1803 in copenhagen, "kingdom of denmark" and Elizabeth Gleen Church Joye. (Peter Joye died on aug 18, 1837, the captain of a ship said to have been lost at sea during a storm at matanzas bay near san juan, puerto rico.) [aug is in hurricane season.] John Elliott Thames and Anna had, according to the family bible, 5 children; George W. Thames (my great grandfather) who married Mary Agnes Dudley in wilmington, nc on oct 22, 1874; Ida Elizabeth Thames, b. jan 30, 1854; Lillie Maria Thames, b. mar 30, 1856; Charles Elliott Thames, b. dec 17, 1849 and died at age 5, oct 14, 1854 of "the prevailing epidemic"; and Daisy Toomer Thames, b. feb 27, 1861, d aug 11, 1862. all of the children were born in charleston. the newspaper clippings, found in the family bible reporting the deaths of Charles Elliott and Daisy Toomer, were quite eloquent and eulogized the children in poems. the 1849 charleston city directory has John Thames working as a clerk at 231 king and residing on boundary. the 1852-55 directories have him working as a clerk at 248 king. in 1852 he was living at 48 calhoun st and, by 1855, had moved to st. phillip. 1856 has the street number as 125, and in 1866 his residence is listed as 123 st. phillip. by that time he was working as a conductor for the SCRR. 1867-68 has A.W. Thames (Alfred Washington, John's brother) and an "F." Thames (working as a clerk) living at the 123 st. phillip address with John. Alfred married Margaret Ann (--) so she was most likely living with them. 1872 shows A.W. Thames having moved into 131 st. phillip street. John apparently continued living at 123 st. phillip street until at least 1874 (haven't gotten further city directory copies past that yet.) by 1874 John Elliott Thames was a train master with the SC railroad. so far that's all i have on my little group. have a good day, julie thames howell, jax, fla

    1. [SCCHARLE] John B. P ALLEY
    2. Hi Listers: I am not having much luck with my great grandfather, Frances Haynes ALLEY, so I shall look for his brother(?) John B. P. ALLEY. John was born in Gibraltar south of Spain in 1813. They (he and his brother Frances) landed in Charleston, SC on November 14, 1817. John applied for citizenship in1836 in Charleston, SC. He was a cabinet maker and later in life moved to Greenville County, SC. His wife was named Adeline C. I feel sure that he had more than one wife but have no proof or names. His children were Raymond ALLEY born 1834 A. K. ALLEY born 1844 Edgar H. ALLEY born 1847 Emma Julia ALLEY born 1850 John B. P. ALLEYJr., 1855 and Lizzie ALLEY born 1861. I believe that all of these offspring were born in South Carolina. I am especially interested in who the parents were of John B. P. ALLEY. Any other information would be helpful also. Joe P. 1. [SCCHARLE] ALLEY, ROBISON, WILSON, NICHOLS
    2. Hi All: I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Francis Haynes ALLEY. Born September 24, 1812, in Gibraltar south of Spain. Landed in Charleston, SC on November 14, 1817. I do not know who his parents were -- most likely French. We believe that a brother of F. H. ALLEY came over with him a John B. P. ALLEY born in 1813 also in Gibraltar south of Spain. John B. P. ALLEY was married to an Adeline C. became a citizen in 1833 I believe. It is thought that John B. P. moved to Greenville Co., SC sometime after 1840 for the census has him in Charleston, SC in 1840. I do not find that F. H. ALLEY ever applied for citizenship. Francis Haynes ALLEY was married to Elizabeth Jane ROBISON of Charleston, SC on September 18, 1839. Later he was married to Malinda WILSON on September 16, 1855. I believe that Malinda was from Macon, GA. Still later he married my great grandmother Lucinda NICHOLS on October 22, 1857. She was from Macon also. Any assistance will be appreciated. Joe P. Alley JAlley1@aol.com

    1. [SCCHARLE] Capt. EDWARD BLAKE (d. 1795)
    2. Edward L. Manigault
    3. Please forgive my multiple posting. If anyone has information on , or knows a descendant of this Edward Blake who married Jane Savage, would you please ask if they have knowledge of his parents and birthplace. I have new(?) information on the background of Jane Savage which might be of interest to them. Edward was a member of the S.C. House of Commons, but his "official" biography for that organization has no information on his parents or place of birth. I have to wonder if someone has this information and just doesn't realize it is not "common knowledge". Several of us who are descended from Edward have been seeking this information for years, some much longer than I, and have had no success. Thank you all for your consideration. Edward Manigault

    3. I am looking for information on the family of Rebecca HOFFMAN (12/7/1799-3/24/1862). She was possibly born in the Goose Creek section of SC. However, she married 1/20/1820 William Fox, Jr of Colleton. HOFF (page 56); Jacob HOFF (page 92); John HOFF (page 51); William HOFF (92); George HOFFMAN (page 484) Does anyone know about the early HOFFMAN families of Charleston and if Rebecca was connected to one of them? Thanks for your help. Barry Fox Greenville, SC

    1. [SCCHARLE] OVERTON/JOHNSON/BROUGHTON
    2. Edward L. Manigault
    3. List: Please forgive my multiple postings. I need some help and this seems the best method of finding it. I am confused (and ignorant) about the wives of both Sir Andrew Broughton (d. 1745) and Gov. Sir Nathaniel Johnson (1644-1713). I had old information that Gov. Johnson's wife was Lady Anne Overton, daughter of Col. Robert Overton and Anne Gardiner.. Is that correct? Recent information has come to me that the wife of Sir Andrew Broughton also may have been an Overton, perhaps either "Ann" or "Johannah", daughter of the same parents. Is either correct? Edward
