Saxegotha village was known as "the Congarees" during most of the 18th century, as "Granby" during the Revolutionary War, and is currently Cayce SC. SC Council Journals, 23 Mar 1750/51, pp. 54-55: The Petition of Herman Gieger humbly setting forth in behalf of Jacob Chubb That Jacob Chubb obtained a Warr't the 15th day of March 1749 for the running out 100 acres of land in the Towns'p of Sax Gotha that y'e land was surveyed in good time but by some accident it happened that it was returned into y'e Surveyor Generals Office seven days too late, prays an order from this Board to Geo. Hunter Esq'r, Survey'r Gen'l, that he receive the said Warrant into his said office and also that the Plat thereof in order to be Certified notwithstanding the time is elapsed. The prayer thereof was granted. SC Council Journals, 2 Feb 1773: The following petitions praying to have Elaps'd platts Certified were presented and Read vizt .. William Strother 150 in Berk'y County [survey'd for] Ja's Chubb [i.e., James/Jacob Chubb had let his land warrant lapse, so it was reassigned to William Strother.] Quit Rent rolls (property taxes) of 1768: Jacob Chubb 150 [acres] Berkley [county] SC Council Journals, 4 Oct 1768 The following Petitions for Warrants of Survey and Certifying Platts presented and Read Viz. ... James Chubb 150 Waters of Santee and Savannah [James and Jacob were/are the same name.]
