I too, have ancestors named Avant from there. Caleb Avant supposedly came from France. He was born ~1700-1743 and owned 510 acres near the Little Pee Dee River. He married Mary Lewis b.~1710-1755. Their daughter married William Thomas Kirton Jr. and her name was Agnes Avant b. 1727-bef 1790. William Thomas Kirton Jr's mother was also an unknown Avant. (Uh-oh.) I don't have her first name but whe was born ~1719 and died before 1800, she married William Thomas Kirton, Sr. It's been 2 years since you posted this message...I just started studying the Avants. Maybe YOU could tell me something that I don't know. :) Julia

They later moved to Tattnall Co., GA. On the 1790 Lancaster, Co., S.C. Census the Ephraim Clinton is located about 7 names away from the Dukes which means that they probably knew each other. Also Elizabeth and John named one of their sons Edward Clinton Duke, who was born in Craven County, S.C. Ephraim Clinton is probably Elizabeth's father. Would appreciate any information to confirm that Elizabeth's last name is Clinton. The name changes to Clanton in the 1820 Fairfield, S.C. Census. Cindy
