This site [from the Boatfolks List] is really fabulous. I just ordered four very hard-to-find family name books and I see a lot of other names from North and South Carolina. As usual, I apologize for any cross-posting. http://www.quintinpublications.com/familygenealogies_a.html Dee For details on sources used, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm

The Joyner Library of East Carolina University sells very nice full-size reproductions; their website includes ordering information. A.S. Salley's History of Orangeburg County, SC, 1704-1782 (published in 1898, but frequently reprinted) describes the settlement of the Township. There's an eyewitness account written by one of the first batch of Swiss immigrants who settled the Township in 1735. See www.rongallman.gallman.com/hansletter.html. If the link doesn't work, search on <Jacob Gallman letter>. The writer was my 6g grandfather, who lived on the Congaree River at the mouth of Congaree Creek, 1 1/2 miles south of Saxegotha village. The mouth of the creek is currently ~2 miles south of Cayce SC. If you're looking for detailed information about the Saxegotha settlement, its history, who lived there when and exactly where, etc., try to locate a copy of Theresa M. Hicks, Saxe Gotha Neighbors (Columbia SC: Peppercorn Publications, Inc., 2000). The book currently costs $40 + $6 S/H, and contains a very large amount of references to source documentation about each family.

I am the ggggranddaughter of George Hughes (Hughs) who was probably born in the Old 96 District of SC. He could have been brought there as a child, I am not sure. He lived in Laurens, SC and married Rhoda Garrett. Both families came originally from New Kent, VA. The Garretts moved to Fairfax county, VA and the Hughes family probably did as well. By 1790, George was in Laurens, SC and married. He had sons named John, William H., Thomas, Aaron, and Moses. I know that he died before 1823 and Rhoda moved on to N. AL. I would like to hear from you and learn more about the "Memorial in 1775" if you have learned anything. I think there was a Joseph Hughes in the area and I know there was a John and Aaron, but I do not know who George's father or brothers were. Perhaps we could put our heads together and figure out something. Thanks, Jan

The list of additional books that I sent out yesterday is a continuation of the books listed on the Bladen County website. If you will click on the url below my name it will take you to that list. I will be glad to do a lookup for anyone that asks, but please, please don't give me a surname and ask if I have anything on it. If you are requesting a lookup I need to know everything that you have and/or what specific things you are looking for. Please give me all the names, dates and places that you have. I have worked for hours on lookups only to be told that they already had all of the information I sent. The plantation pictures will be a difficult project. Only a few of the 13 plantation books that I have are indexed and then it is usually by the plantation's name not the owner's. Three of the books were published in the 1800s during a time that many of the now-lost plantations were in magnificent condition and if we can find something for you it will certainly be worthwhile. One of the books has over a thousand plantation pictures in it so it takes quite a while to search for your request. Again. I need the state, county, plantation name and owner's name if you have any of that information. I have two books that I can use to try to cross-reference the names of an owner with his/her plantations. Some of the plantation books have a lengthy history of the home and families that have lived there, three even have the floor plans. I will send you this information too. There is no charge for the pictures or the mailings, - just be a bit patient while I wade through this. I have much more on the homes of South Carolina and Georgia than I do on North Carolina. Dee For details on sources used, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm
Please forgive the cross-posting. These are books that I am using that are not on the bibliography list as yet (we'll get around to it). The Charleston Orphan House book is fabulous! The architecture and pictorial books have homes of a great many of our families. If you think there is a chance your family had a home (plantation, etc.) in any of these, I'll check and mail you a copy of the page. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JeB.2ACI/33.1 Message Board Post: I have the history you may need. I can trace it back to the father of Thomas. I think your date of death is that of the 5th child of John & Mary (Dudley) McKendree. Thomas was the 6th child. Born 1767 and Thomas died October 1830. So many people were simply buried by a river and markers disappear with time. Thomas was and Overseer for the Ball family, located north of Charleston, up the Cooper River, on the West Branch, after the river branches in two directions. This is a possibility. My great aunt doing the McKendree history took a route through Monck's Corner, they "...wound our way over the canals and branches to the bridge that crossed over the West Branch and headed South between the two branches, the road meandered close to the West Branch....came to a little river settlement near Strawberry Chapel and came about the ruins of the Biggin Church..." His oldest brother, Bishop William McKendree, preached at one of the oldest churches in South Carolina, Biggin Chu! rch in Berkeley. Please contact me at eileen9557@aol.com for further info.
