According to the Census in Massachusetts where Daniel T moved, he (listed as race: white, born approx 1830) and his wife Martha (listed as race: black, born approx. 1835), were both born in Charleston, SC. There three oldest children: H.A.E., born approx 1850; Edward, born approx 1852; and Josiah W., born approx. 1854 were all born in SC. However there three youngest children: Frances M., born 1859; Nathaniel D. (my gggrandfather) born 1861, and J.B.born approximately 1866 were born in MA (Frances and Nathaniel were born in Cambridge, MA). Under the birth registries for Frances and Nathaniel it lists Daniel T.'s occupation as "Gentleman". I have found a Daniel Thomas HEYWARD, born in 1830 in Charleston, listed as the second son of Daniel Cuthbert HEYWARD but I have not been able to verify if they are one in the same person.
