According to his obituary, my grandmother Mamie was his adopted daughter, but she does not show up on any census. However, on the 1900 census a Mary E. James shows up as an adopted daughter. There is no other mention of her, ever. Hoping to find descendents of him, or his youngest son Charles E. Washington (b. 1899), an attorney, to see if they have any information.
