Author: smbryan178 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/316/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I recently found out that Julius Washington(born sometime between 1859 and 1864), an attorney, legislator, and namesake of the first library opened to African Americans in Beaufort - now closed) adopted my grandmother Mamie, according to his obituary. I don't know whether or not it was a legal adoption. According to the 1900 census, he also adopted a daughter named Mary E. James. I don't know if she was his wife Eliza's child who he decided to adopt or if she was an "outside" child. I would love to find more information on Julius's relation to my grandmother.
