He appears on a muster roll for 1756 and by 1761 was resident in St. Helenas. He was sued for debt (as Philip Hederly) by John Gordon and Gray Elliott, Beaufort Merchants, in that year. He married a widow, Mary Williams in St. Helenas in 1768 and they had at least one child, Sarah. Any information, particularly regarding his trade, (his father was a bellfounder), or any other sighting of this family name, would be most gratefully received. I see mention of Beaufort, So. Carolina in this old letter that I found on another mail list. I hope that it may be of interest to some. I don't know anything more about it. ========================================== A letter written by Mary Ella (Simmons) Pusey, wife of Edward Pusey, just 11 weeks prior to her death on May 1, 1884. Mrs. Du Pont is, I believe, Sophie Du Pont, a family friend. Sophia is Ella's sister, Sophia (Simmons) Porter. Sophia's husband, William T. Porter, was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. Mary Porter is perhaps Sophia's sister-in-law or mother-in-law. Julia is unknown to me but William and Sophia named a daughter Julia so perhaps it's another Porter? Isabella Grimshaw ran a girls boarding school in Philadelphia in the early part of the 19th century. Sophie is Ella's daughter, then attending Mt. Holyoke College. ============================== "Wilmington Feb. 14th/84 Dear Mrs. DuPont How sorry I am to hear that you are not feeling well, but this long continued spell of damp weather must have a bad effect upon every one, particularly those who are not very strong: please accept my warmest thanks for those lovely flowers - such a treat in Winter - they are still looking fresh & beautiful. It is so kind in you dear Mrs. Du Pont to think of us when you have so many people & so many things to occupy your thoughts - I trust that your health may be soon restored, and that it may be the will of our dear Father in Heaven to spare you many years yet to your friends. Sophia returned about three ago, she has not been at all well, took a very severe cold, & was threatened with pneumonia, she is much better now, but has not ventured out in this damp weather; the cold in Beaufort was terrible, the houses being so open & the people so unprepared for cold weather, & many of them so poor... Sophia says the water in their room froze, & she could not kep warm but sat rolled up in a shawl, hovering over the fire, they say they had not had such weather for one hundred years; Julia will remain until March, when her Aunt Mrs. Donner (Mary Porter's sister, whom no doubt you remember) expects to return with her. I have read her letter to Sophia & should think she is a very lovely and sensible woman. I saw Kittie (or Hettie?) about three weeks ago, she was looking very well, better than she has been for some time. Went to see Miss Isabella Grimshaw and found her looking very well, and seeming very bright and cheerful, she enjoys so much having her old scholars come to see her, but at times she must feel lonely and desolate, for of course the doctor is out a great deal, & many an hour she spends alone. Sophie is doing very well at school & appears to be happy & interested in her studies, in her last letter she said, - six more Sundays and I shall be at home again; they give their Spring vacation in March, she will come home about the 28th and return the 9th of April. Hoping dear Mrs. Du Pont that you may soon be better and with love I remain yours aff. Ella Pusey"

Jemimah was the daughter of Daniel McCarty of Lincoln County (formally Tryon) and Granville Counties, NC. He had a brother Cornelius who owned land near Daniel in NC, SC. Daniel married Agness (???). Among their children was my 5th great grandmother Jemimah. Their family owned property in Granville County and Lincoln County(formerly Tryon) In NC. Land was sold between Daniel and a Johnston whose son Samuel eventually married Daniel's daughter Olley (Olive) Evidently Daniel's brother Cornelius left for South Carolina before Daniel did because he transferred some land to Daniel and Hugh Blair. Blair married Daniel's daughter Jemimah and moved to SC and eventually GA with Daniel . His sons Daniel Jr. John & Jacob moved also as did most of his daughters. There was a Cornelius recorded in Lincoln County NC as head of a household of 3 males of 16 years or older, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Since we know Daniel and his older brother Cornelius was in SC or GA by that time. I wonder if this might be the father of the two brothers. I do not know anything about his wife and children. I believe the Cornelius from Mecklenburg (formerly Tryon) County NC who married Jemima Bell and move eventually to KY and Ohio are members of the McCarthy family from Stafford County VA. I do not believe that he was because his marriage date was in the 1820's. and he went west while my McCarty's migrated southwards. I believe Cornelius, the eldest son of Daniel who was the heir in law of Cornelius' of SC estate and married in GA. I still haven't worked that out yet. One fact I have discovered is that there were two families (one was named Goforth)involved with the McCarty's in Tryon and/or Granville County who can be connected in Bucks County PA with a Cornelius McCarty. I'm not sure about this but perhaps it is worth investigating. I am hopeful that someone may have some data that might open a few doors to my McCarty/Blair Family. Thanks. Walter's claims about his father's service have never been confirmed, and may or may not be true. It would seem that there are those who would make assumption without knowing the facts, and who would prefer to spread such assumptions all over cyberspace, instead of taking the trouble to research further. Eliza B. Haskell was born on April 22, 1814 and died January 12, 1852, but the book does not specify where. It's very possible that some of the records on her might have been lost when the cities of Columbia and Orangeburg in South Carolina burned down during the Civil War. The book details very little about Haskell and Alfred Raoul, although it does include a letter written by Alfred in the aftermath of General William Tecumseh Sherman's burning of Columbia in 1865. Is Eliza Haskell related to Confederate Col. Alexander Cheves Haskell? The father of Alfred Raoul was indeed Dr. John Louis Raoul, or in full, Jean Rose Marie Desire' Raoul de ChampManoir. Raoul de ChampManoir was born in 1783 in Dinan, France and was a marquis during Napoleon's reign. His family hailed from Burgundy. Dr. Raoul studied medicine under Napoleon's physician Phillippe Pinel and developed a close friendship with Napoleon's nephew, the Duc D'Enghein. Raoul penned a set of memoirs after the duke's assassination and Napoleon was so incensed by them that he imprisoned Raoul, but his life was spared by the intercession of his brother. However, he was exiled from the country in 1809 and boarded a vessel that eventually sunk off the Atlantic coast. He clung to the wreckage for 24 hours before being rescued by a schooner that brought him to Charleston. The day afterward he came to aid an elderly man who was thrown out of a carriage by his horses. Raoul set the man's leg in place and ended up being paid to continue attending upon the man, wh! ich enables him to start up his own practice in Charleston. He married the widow of John Paul Thompson, Caroline Eliza Theus in Belleville plantation, South Carolina sometime in 1812, probably during that summer. If you want to learn about the Theus family of Charleston, I suggest you read a copy of Jeremiah Theus, Colonial Painter of Charleston..?His paintings?of well known Charleston people are in many museums.?The Theus family were from Switzerland and settled in Charaleston with many descendants. I have been trying desperately to find out information about my grandfather Elias Pinckney Sr. He was born in South Carolina in 1904. He had an older brother by the name of William Hezekiah Pinckney, born in 1899/1900. I also heard there may have been a couple sisters, Shirley and Ruth (not sure though). Both brothers moved to Philadelphia, PA during the late 1920's. I would like to know who their parents were. There are so many Pinckney's in South Carolina, you have to know at least one of the parents, in order to follow the correct Pinckney family line. I have been told that their mother's name was "Wilhelmina" (Both brothers have a daughter with that name). I need this information the help complete my family tree. My family tree can be found on Ancestry.com: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=6534158 Information about my grandparents: Elias Pinckney Sr. married my grandmother Essie Green, also from South Carolina. They had three children: Wilhelmina Rebecca Pinckney - 192* (my mother) - Living in Philadelphia Frances Eastermae Pinckney - 192* (my aunt) - Living in Philadelphia Elias Pinckney Jr. - 1930 (my uncle) - Passed away in 1998 - San Francisco CA This is what I know about my great uncle William: William H Pinckney married a Julia, I don't know her maiden name. They had three daughters ( I think) Wilhelmina Pinckney - 1917 - Born SC Helen Pinckney - 1926/27 - Philadelphia, PA Elouise Pinckney - 1916 - Born SC My mother told me that William and his family lived on Colorado Street in South Philadelphia. My grandmother "Essie" passed away in 1968, and I remember the names Julia and Wilhelmina Pinckney in the obituary book. I have Pinckney aunts, uncles, and cousins living throughout Philadelphia and South Carolina, but I know absolutely nothing about them. I remember a Pinckney cousin of mine from South Philadelphia was killed in action in Vietnam, (He looked exactly like my Uncle Elias Jr.) During the late 60's to early 70's a cousin whose was nickname Pookie use to visit us quite often. I heard she suffered from a stroke a few years ago. If any of these names seems familiar to you, please contact me. My cousins from "Philadelphia, Pa", who maybe related to Uncle William & Aunt Julia, please contact me. I don't want anything, just a bit of our ancestral history.
