I don't know whether or not it was a legal adoption. According to the 1900 census, he also adopted a daughter named Mary E. James. I don't know if she was his wife Eliza's child who he decided to adopt or if she was an "outside" child. I would love to find more information on Julius's relation to my grandmother. She is not listed on any census as Mamie Washington. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Washington, Jr. Charles E. Washington was apparently an attorney and also my father's first cousin. I was 8 when my father died in 1971. My father was 18 years older than my mother. He did not tell her a lot about his family. As far as I know everyone on his side of the family is dead. I am hoping that there are descendents of his mother and father's relatives out there somewhere because I would like to put together the puzzle pieces of my history. If anyone has any information on Charles E. Washington, Jr. or his siblings or descendents I sure would appreciate it. The following is all that I know: MY GRAND PARENTS Sammie(Sam or Samuel) Bryan born abt. 1880 Mamie Washington Bryan born abt. 1887 MY DAD Hammond David Bryan born abt. 1918 MY UNCLES Sam Bryan born abt 1914 Nelson Bryan born abt. 1915 A DAUGHTER OF MY GRANDPARENTS THAT SHOWS UP IN THE 1920 CENSUS BUT WAS NEVER MENTIONED BY MY FATHER Eloise Alston born abt. 1904 MY FATHER'S FIRST COUSIN Charles E. Washington, Jr. 805 Duke Street Beaufort, South Carolina That address was on the 1953 letter to my father. I don't know if that is where his law practice was or if that is where he lived or if they were one and the same. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: smbryan178 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/312/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have information on descendents of African American Bryans born/living in Beaufort in the late 1880s and early 1900s. My father, Hammond David Bryan (shows up as David Bryan in the 1920 census) was born in 1917. His father was Samuel(Sammie)Bryan b. 1880, and his mother was named Mamie Bryan (maiden name was Washington), b. 1887. There were 3 sons: Nelson, Sam, and my father. On the 1920 census, someone named Eloise Alston shows up as Sam and Mamie's daughter. I was 8 when my father died in 1971, so I know next to nothing about his side of the family. The thing is that although my father told my mother about his brothers, he never mentioned this Eloise person. I can not find any information on her except on the 1920 census where she is listed as Eloise Alston, daughter. I have also looked up Eloise Bryan. I found one in the 1910 census. The age coincides with how old Eloise Alston would have been 10 years earlier but that does not mean that is the same person. I hope someone has some information. Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.
