According to the Census in Massachusetts where Daniel T moved, he (listed as race: white, born approx 1830) and his wife Martha (listed as race: black, born approx. 1835), were both born in Charleston, SC. There three oldest children: H.A.E., born approx 1850; Edward, born approx 1852; and Josiah W., born approx. 1854 were all born in SC. However there three youngest children: Frances M., born 1859; Nathaniel D. (my gggrandfather) born 1861, and J.B.born approximately 1866 were born in MA (Frances and Nathaniel were born in Cambridge, MA). Under the birth registries for Frances and Nathaniel it lists Daniel T.'s occupation as "Gentleman". I have found a Daniel Thomas HEYWARD, born in 1830 in Charleston, listed as the second son of Daniel Cuthbert HEYWARD but I have not been able to verify if they are one in the same person. The SC Historical Society has a ledger that lists the Losses Due to the Enemy in the years 1861 1862. Most of these losses were along the coast. I have copies of many of the pages but not all. I am going to list the names that I have in each category. If you have a family name on it and would like the rest of the information on your family e-mail me and I will try and get it to you as soon as I can. Some of the information is more extensive some is minimal. This ledger went with the Losses that were filed with the state. At this point in the war it was assumed that the property lost would be replaced by the new Southern Govt. at the end of the war. The SC Archives has a copy of all the actual pages that still exist. I also have copies of all of those but the ledger has many more entries than existing actual claims. Primus who was his neice in the late 1800's. My family runs deep in the Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper County and consist of the following: Smith, Russell, Lawton, Bascomb, which included Eugene and Robert Primus. They were all considered "free people of color and/or Mulattos" Maybe there is a connection.

No oral history has survived to tell us where he landed. Assume Charleston. We first found him in Georgia with no family, then by 1830's in Florida with a wife and he started family there. We know he had a sister Anastacia and stories say his father was a teacher at an academy in Beaufort. We don't know his parents' names. From naming conventions, his father was possibly named Patrick Walsh. Have looked through all historic educational institutions online and nothing dates that far back. Must have been a smaller school and disappeared.
