Smith). Jim Smith is reportedly a cousin to Milton Cole. This information was provided by Mrs. C. W. Dunson nee Cole of Clifton TX. You might find some additional information on Elizabeth Blythwood's connection to the Cole family in the following references: Mary Edith Cole Papers, Texas Collection, Baylor University. Surnames: Cole, Bythewood, Graham Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/274/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how the Bythewoods and Coles are connected. I have reason to believe they are. First, Elizabeth Bythewood (b. 1800 in SC) is buried in the Cole Cemetery in Bosque, Texas. And someone noted that she was a cousin to Milton H. Cole and his siblings (with no details). Also, both Coles and Bythewoods are buried in the Beaufort (SC) Baptist Chuch Yard. Finally, James P. Cole (b. 1814 in SC, later of Galveston) (Milton's father) married a Mary J Graham (b. 1824 in SC, buried in Bosque), daughter of James Graham who was a pastor at the Beaufort (SC) Baptist Church where Daniel Bythesood was Reverend -- names indicate a connection to James Graham Bythewood of SC. I am hoping someone can fill in the missing link here -- I've been racking my brain and scouring the internet to no avail. Thanks in advance for any information.

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/92.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Senora: My ancestors took the surname Blake after the Emancipation Proclamation. My family was originally enslaved by the Mary Brandford Bull (Bull family of South Carolina), then when she died the slaves were distributed to her four granddaughters, one of which was married to Daniel Blake, son of Joseph Blake. They lived at Newington plantation in the 1770s and owned more than 700 slaves. I have a list of over 100 slaves that were inherited by Elizabeth Blake. I also have the list of over 300 other slaves that were sent to the other three granddaughters. After the Blakes died Major Pierce Butler (husband of one of the other granddaughters, Mary Middleton Butler) moved some of the South Carolina slaves to Georgia (Butler's Island and St. Simon's Island). Four of the slaves were my ancestors, Captain (b. 1765), his wife, Darcus (b. 1764), and their children, London (b. 1793) and Lizette (b. 1795). In 1821, London and his wife, Judy, had a son Wallace. I was able to find Wallace (listed as Walter in 1870 and Wallace in 1880) on the 1870 census for Georgia under the surname Blake. These slaves were known as Geechees because of the way they talked and the customs they had. I am sure the slaves on these plantations were intermingled and some probably share common ancestors.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hortons of Beaufort and Hampton Co. SC Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/271/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My sister-in-law and I made a trip to Hampton Co. SC courthouse a few months ago. Hampton Co. only has land records from about 1878 forward. Beaufort Co. Courthouse sent us to the old Depot on North Street in Beaufort. There are a lot of records there. They are in boxes and books. Just tell them who you are researching. They were very nice. One signs in and someone will bring boxes and books for you to look through. We found a divorce decree for James Horton (father of Redden Horton). He was filing divorce from Rosa. She was d/o Owen Harvey. James was married to Sarah Bostic and, not likely Sarah Moore. James was in his 70s when he married Rosa (about 17 at the time of marriage). James file for divorce after Rosa delivered a mulatto son. She gave birth 5 months into the marriage. James stated that Rosa presented herself to be a virtuous woman before marriage. Also, found land records. James owned 1100 acres called "Crowfield" Plantation. Solomon and Moses also ! owned land. Solomon owned Pepper Hill Plantation---which is believed to be the one in Hilton Head. The land is described in Beaufort Co. along the old Savannah Railway and between Charleston. We managed to get several documents copied---and hopefully will make it back to the Old Depot for further research. So, if you are looking for people in Hampton Co. SC, you might try Beaufort Co. SC---and in Charleston. SC is a state that kept duplicate copies of records about 1790. There were two Secretary of States and two Dept. of Treasury. Records were shuttled between Charleston, Beaufort, Hampton,--and into Greenville by rail during CW. Some records were left at train stations, but no one retrieved them. If you can't find records in Columbia, there just might be some in Charleston.

His remains were never recovered. When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 51 families in South Carolina that have not been located. There is one family from Beaufort County that has not been located. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. 3. Hi, I grew up in Beaufort... Gullah is a local dialect that is spoken there, specifically on St. Helena Island and surrounding areas in Beaufort County, just outside of the City of Beaufort. Probably two of the best resources are Ron and Natalie Daise, two Beaufortonians that have embraced the Gullah heritage and continue to keep it alive.
