    1. [SCBEAUFO] Beaufort VA Cemetery - Cpl James William PARKHILL
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dougstorie Surnames: Parkhill, Patterson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/280/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Seeking photograph of Union Army marker for Corporal James William PARKHILL (1843-1865) of Company "A" - 78th Ohio Infantry Regiment. Previously contacted VA personnel at cemetery, over the years, to be told, "Yes Sir, we will do it..." and it never happens. Below from a letter to my G-g-grandparents John Parkhill and Martha Jane Patterson of Claysville County, Ohio - In Memoriam Corporal James Parkhill, Co. A, 78th Regt. Ohio Vet. Infantry Vols. was killed January 28th [1865] by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of a private of the 68th Ohio, the ball passing directly through his bowels, caused his death in a very few hours. We, the members of his company, do hereby express our deep sorrow in having lost a brave and faithful soldier, a noble and generous companion and true christian. A more patriotic and better soldier never carried musket, always cheerful, tenderhearted and uncomplaining, he was loved by all. We are called to imitate his virtues and do deeply sympathize with his afflicted parents and friends who have lost an affectionate and dutiful son and a noble and generous hearted companion. His name will ever be cherished by his Company with the highest admiration and his manly, christian and noble characteras a soldier and friend will ever stand in memorys brightest page. We are called by this Mysterious Providence to humble ourselves and put our houses in order and be prepared to meet our God. We rejoice to know that his life amidst the trials, temptations and hardships of the soldier was such as to give evidence that he now sleeps sweetly and peacefully in Jesus; his Spirit is encircled in the glories of Eternity. Though suddenly cut down in the days of his youth his life was not in vain. God had need of him in the temple above. He has gone from his labor and his works to follow him. /s/ Members of Company A >>> Thank you in advance. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. At first, that sounded like am impossible task to us. However, since April we have a tremendous amount of progress! If you visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/southcarolina/sc-graves/sc-graves1.html, you'll be able to view what progress we have made. Twenty-five counties have been completed and 21 are in their final stages. We are currently using about 8 different resources to determine estimated cemetery GPS locations that will normally put you within eyesight of the cemeteries. We hope that you'll find a use for this info. Please tell others about this webpage. Author: KAurichio Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.beaufort/167.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for your reply to my posting. I have a little more info on Dopson, but nothing at all on Dora Lugg. I've been to St. Helena's cemetery in Beaufort, but there are no Lugg graves there. Their archives have not been digitized, and are not open to members of the public without special permission. I have to contact their archivist and ask for an appointment, which I've been remiss in not doing. Most of what I have on the Dopsons came from Judge Huxford many years ago. There is some confusion about Charles Isaac's father and grandfather (both named Joseph R.). One of them fought in the Revolution, probably the older. There is some indication he died at the Battle of Ramsors Mill in NC in 1780, while fighting with Capt. Dalton's Volunteers from Pr. Wm. Parish. There is also a connection to the Hardins, a prominent Beaufort County clan. Let me know if you'd like more. Thanks again for your interest. Someday we'll break through the Lugg "brick wall". -- Kathleen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I do have more information for you, especially the 1850 census. The information on the 1830 census is limited, it only gives you under different ages. In the 1850 census, it gives the ages of the Moses, Daniel and James. There are other Horton's in the 1850's that are probably one's that were not listed by name in the 1830's. I also live in Beaufort and can check our local library, if need be. Jain in SC jmcguigan@charter.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [SCBEAUFO] gc-gateway@rootsweb.com - what does this mean?
    2. Obviously a change by Roots Web has occurred, and I failed to read an explanation. What does the subject address mean? If I attempt to write a letter to it, it bounces. This gc-gateway term crosses all surnames that are discussed. Thanks HF Perhaps it is an effort to force people to refrain from sending 'private' messages? And, instead force all correspondence to go thru a bona fide LIST? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

I am trying to locate parents of Alfred Raoul and/or his wife Eliza Hassell(or Haskell). Their daughter was named Georgianna Heyward Raoul (b:1838 c:20 Oct 1840 @ Sheldon Church, Prince Williams Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina d:after 1910 m:Paul Trapier Horry 19 Jan 1858 in South Carolina). It was very common in this line for children's middle names to be their grandmother's maiden names. I have not had any luck finding information on either grandmother. Alfred's father was Dr. Louis Raoul from France. The only information I have on his mother (Mrs. Raoul) is that she was born in South Carolina. All I know of Eliza Hassell/Haskell is that she was born around 1815 in South Carolina. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information that could even possibly connect the above families. Thank you Crystal Peterson :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
