    3. My Scates goes back to Zackariah Scates, born 1793 in Virginia, died in TN. I don't have a Valentine. My line is, Bob Johnson, Leota Chewning Johnson, Cora Scates Chewning, Samuel C Scates, Tensley Scates, Zackariah Scates William Scates, William Scates Sr, John Haynes Scates, James Scates born 1655 in MA ,wife Sarah. Looks like our Scates seem to start in MA going south, then west VA, TN, IN, MO, & KS. Author: cscates91 Surnames: Scates Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.scates/174/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Cousins, Recently my grandfather George Scates, past frequenter of family history forums, has passed away. I have inherited all his Scates and related genealogy papers. Although seemingly disorganized, I do have much knowledge of my Scates line from growing up, as I loved my grandpa dearly. I have also inherited a huge interest of where my family came from, and have been working on other lines since last year. My direct blood Scates line is as follows: Myself, James, George, Wilbur, George, James, James, Ithiel, John, Valentine. I am a member of the DAR but haven't done much with it besides joining. One thing I know for sure, is that he had some unfinished business. I myself have come up unsuccessful. But I do know there are many Scates researchers to help. It is my goal to complete what my grandpa had started and surpass. ------------------------------ Now to the point: Where did Valentine Scates come from, and who were his parents/siblings? When and where did he die? I do not have my grandpa's records with me at the moment but I know several things about him from these boards. Valentine Scates was born approximately 1680 in Haverforth? MA. He married Hannah Crockett/Stafford/King. He had 3 children: John, Elizabeth, and Abigail (Mary? I have the correct name but don't remember it right now). He was mentioned, witnessed and/or a subject of at least 2 different court proceedings, one of which he was accused of fathering a child by Sarah Turbet who later married a Connor. He was also a witness of a woman who lived with and wanted to marry a man by Black. I have seen that others have found tax papers placing him in places in the 1710s. I know he moved to Berwick, ME. Misc: I believe that I found that the general concensus is that all Scates's originated from one family. I have seen a few real early mentions in books of a Scates bricklayer in the mid/late 1600s. I have seen mentionings of a Jeames Scates, John Scate, among others. I know of several name variants, whether they are truly of my line I do not know: Skates, Scales, Skeates, Scate, Keates, Cate. --------------------------- To sum it up: What is known about Valentine Scates? In addition: Does his son John Scates b. 1726, who was a AR soldier, have a known headstone? --------------------------- Once college settles down in a week, I plan on digging through and organizing the info I have inherited. I did a quick look and didn't find any answers, which my grandmother confirmed as far as she knew. Thank you for your time to those who read and can help; I hope I in turn can help others with anything I may have. If anyone would like a copy of my grandfather George F. Scates's obituary, please send me a message! Christina Scates Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
