Nick, I live in southern Alberta, a bit far for anyone in UK to come to meetings of the computer genealogy group. Group started a few years before I joined in 1992, demonstrations about genealogy software, searching online sources, family books. http://www.afhs.ab.ca/ Most people who attended the meeting already owned a scanner and some have been using scanners of various kinds since 1996. The hardest part is learning to scan for a particular purpose, usually a collection of pictures suitable for a web site or family book. That is not the same as collecting large, archival copies for printing one page at a time. Alberta Family Histories society has other meetings with various topics, most recently about the Home Children. I've been looking up some information about Guest Children who were evacuated to Canada in 1940 for a woman who lived with a doctor's family for two years when she was very young.
