Laney, you can do this using "cut and paste" in most cases. However, make sure your mail message is set in the FORMAT of HTML/RICH TEXT as it won't work in PLAIN TEXT messages. Be aware that it will increase the size of your message dramatically, depending on the size of the image you are pasting. This may cause problems for the recipient, as their ISP may limit message size or download size. To cut and paste the image, open it in your photo editing program, click EDIT|SELECT ALL then press CTRL-C. It will then be "copied" to Windows Clipboard. Go to your message. Now, position your cursor where you want the image "pasted" (above or below any text already there). If you want it in the centre of a page, select that option on your mail program toolbar, otherwise the default will be the left hand side. Once you have the correct position, press CTRL-V. Hopefully, you should now see the image in your message. Some mail programs may have a problem with this, but most will allow it.
