Dear Ann and All: This is what I have done to solve the problem of a new installation of XP. My grandson installed XP so it could be uninstall it if necessary. After he left for abroad, my granddaughter's boy friend, who has worked with computers. took over. When the HP 4c scanner would not work, we downloaded new drivers for it. but it still would not work. Then I found other programs that would not work including Sony Hotburn. He updated Winodws by installing Service Pack 1, but it was still no go. The same programs would not work including the scanner and Hotburn. He advised me to uninstall, and I agreed. Everything is running now. The salesman who has helped me for years told me not to attempt XP if I wanted my older programs and hardware to work, but I could not resist when my grandson gave me Windows XP for Christmas, and wanted to install it for me. I thought maybe he could work miracles, because he is excellent with computers. That is the story of my experience with XP Winifred
Hi Winifred XP has a way of running programs that don't work in XP but that you know it work before installing XP. If you left click on the START button. Then hover over the 'All Programs' Icon you should see the list of programs. If you now RIGHT click the particular program you are interested in you will get another menu with 'Properties' at the bottom. Left click on properties and you will get a 'Setup Properties Window' for the program. Left click on the 'Compatability' Tag at the top and you will see a section called 'Compatability Mode' Click in the box marked 'Run this program in compatability mode for' and you can now choose the original Windows Operating system that you know the program worked in. This worked for me on a couple of old pieces of software I was loathed to loose.
