    3. Bob: This is in response to your letter of a week ago concerning Windows XP. By the time I received your letter we had already removed XP and reverted to my original program Windows 98SE. Quite a few of my programs would not work with XP, but the ones that were the clinchers were Sony Hotburn and my HP ScanJet 4C Scanner. We did not try to do anything about Hotburn, but we tried hard to make the scanner work. We downloaded new drivers. It did not work. We downloaded Service Pack 1. It still would not work. The young man doing this read everything he could, and decided that a seven year old scanner could not possiby work with XP. I have an Epson 2450 Stylus Perfection Photo Scanner that is wonderful, but for OCR scans and, also, because the HPs larger bed scans large documents, I do not want to part with my HP Scanjet. Do you think the emulation you wrote about would help that to work?My grandson will be back in a few months and maybe he can try out what you suggest. What do you think? 3. Dual boot computer with WinME and XP Pro was set up to handle a scanner purchased 1996 and an older version of OCR software that happens to work better with 1930's carbon copies of an interesting report about family farms. I think my 1997 scanner with the largest glass area still works with XP but it isn't currently connected to check. Easiest method to run old equipment and software is by keeping an older computer but the slow ME unit is getting crowded out by a newer spare computer. After several days of experiments, my technical advisor was wishing that he had started with a full retail version of XP Pro instead of the upgrade. ME was a full retail version and easier to install. 3. Hi Winifred I don't know what to advice. The XP Compatibility tag did work for me but only on programs not hardware. I have just had a look at the HP site again and it definitely says that the ScanJet 4C is supported and there is a Driver and Instruction sheet available for down load. This is a large file 19 Kb so it might take some time to down load it. I would have a go again. HP have a technical support service on their web page if you get stuck. I had to fork out £173 because my Scanjet 4s isn't supported and it hurts.
