    3. KG, My Canon cameras come with a battery pack so I am unfamiliar with the problems associated with "non-standards." I never seem to have a battery problem, however. In fact, I once took photographs at a family reunion for about four hours with a Canon G3 before the battery showed signs of dying. That was about 350 photographs AND the LCD screen was on for the whole session. I do have a backup battery and I "cycle" it amongst several cameras. In any event, the above mentioned time was the only occasion I could have been in trouble. Now, granted it is possible to be somewhere without electricity for an extended period but I suspect I would also be without a 7-11 to run into and buy a packet of AA's. (Now, if they could do something about power to the Flash unit.) There are two schools of thought on large storage cards. One is that you can place a lot of eggs in one basket... and all that entails. I have two 2-gb cards that each hold about 150 images. In addition, I have several 512-mb one's and a number of 256-mb one's left over from earlier days. The 256's are, actually, too small and the 512's are somewhat of a compromise on the "putting too many images at risk" dilemma. But I do enjoy the convenience of the 2 gb storage. By the way, the "lag time" can be somewhat helped by using a "fast" storage card. Nevertheless, it does take some time to save a 7-9 mb file to a disk regardless of what you use. That is, in my opinion, the only advantage that film has over digital. (Of course, I have heard that doesn't seem to present a problem for those $8-$10, 000 cameras but I'll never know for sure.) There is nothing worse than to be on a trip and have your batteries run out. If you use AA, you can buy them almost anywhere. I use rechargables most of the time, but have used single-use batteries in a pinch especialy when travelling. For fast action, my Fujifilm S7000 digital camera has a feature that allows me to hold down the shutter, taking many still pictures very quickly. These are held in memory without saving to the card until the shutter is released. I can save either the first 5 or the last 5 of the series. I've taken some very good action pictures of soccer games using this feature. There is a considerable lag time for saving the series of 5 pictures before you can take the next series, so some planning ahead is required. One other thing... buy a BIG memory card. I have one that holds 2 Gb. That way I never ever run out of space and can experiement like crazy. This is the great advantage of digital. Another cheaper option is to buy several cards that hold less. For the convenience factor the bigger ones are more expensive per megabyte.
