Dear All: Apologies for that unfinished letter that went out under the wrong title "Emai address", and without a signature. I am resending it, I hope properly. Here is a better copy. Here is an after Christmas problem I need to solve. My grandson gave me Windows XP for Christmas and installed it on my computer, then flew to England. Almost everything works except one item I hate to lose. I have 2 scanners: 1. An Epson 2459 Perfection that is doing fine. 2. My old stand-by HP Scanjet 4c which I still wnat to use, but won't work. I checked with Hewlett Packard on the Internet, and there is a Download called HP DeskScan 2.9 driver and Copy utility. I can download and installit directly, or download it to my Download file and install it later. There is no warranty on it. You use it at your own risk. Does anyone else have experience with this, or have helpful advice for me? Thank you for any help I can get. Winifred

I have a HP 1120C, an earlier version of your 1220CSE no doubt. I have had this printer for about 4 yrs. It has an option in the "features" section of the setup to print banners. I have never had a desire to print a banner. I have recently used this printer to print posters to 11" X 14" by expanding a 8.5" X 11" document in MS Word to fit 11" X 14" paper. Susanne, Do you need a banner to roll for mailing? One of my earliest "published" family history samples is an 18" wide "scroll" nearly 12 feet high with hundreds of tiny names and some errors. It was replaced by a printed book with a few stories. Wall charts can be saved as PDF files and printed at a copy service but I don't want to pay more than $7 per square foot and don't want charts planned with color photos to be printed as BW. Charts with photos are easily joined together and taped on a folding 4'x3' foamboard for display. One particular foamboard has been driven from Alberta to the USA for two of the major genealogy conferences as well as local meetings. It is still useful two years later. Wide banner charts are hard to read, especially without pictures. Check the paper guide on a wide printer to see if it will keep normal size pages and envelopes straight if you plan to use the new all-purpose printer full time. Letter/legal size HP 970 has a banner setting but I've always used it with the two-sided attachment for long family books or single sheets of legal paper. Some of the family books have charts in book format, and the vertical ancestor chart with boxes moved off page breaks also works well with wide enough margins for books. Some printers allow poster-size enlargements of photos to be printed on multiple sheets of paper and joined together. That style also allows color photocopies and enlarged photocopies that turn out sharper than a reasonable size scan of a highly detailed original. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susanne Hackbarth" > I will be looking for a 13" wide printer. My apologies to the list. I meant to reply to Susanne privately. By any chance will you be using this printer to print on fabric? Susanne, I have the HP 1220 printer and I do know that when I printed out a larger lettered deal it was individual papers but then that was the only paper I have. I am guessing it depends on the type of paper you use. I can print using a larger size paper which I like about this particular printer. Kathy
I made a mistake. My printer is an HP7550 PhotoSmart. I have an Epson scanner. Thank you again, Susanne
A little off topic, but I can't access newsgroups at the present time to find something on this subject. I will be looking for a 13" wide printer. My Epson 7550 has banner listed in the properties box, but says banner 8-1/2 by 11. Does banner mean continuous printing on separate sheets of paper. Or can I print something 44 inches long as an example. Thank you, Susanne Hackbarth

Has anyone tried Qimage? There is a 30 day evaluation version. The web site shows a most interesting comparison of pictures resized with Qimage and an expensive name-brand image program. http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/ I'm happy with my current keep-it-simple Windows XP send-to-email resizing for Family Tree Maker scrapbooks and e-mail attachments. Paint Shop Pro 7.04 used for scanning and image touchups. Haven't found a need to use a separate digital photo album. The largest-ever FTM scrapbook is up to 225 images for one person sorted by date and those can be printed by category -- Family, Business, Church etc. Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cathy Pinner" > I've been testing this software too and have now bought it. I think the software is designed to handle this quite easily, but remember I am still testing it. My intention is only to report on other options that may be useful to someone. The help file states: "If you move your image files to another directory or from your hard disk to CD or from CD to a CD with a new label, you have to tell PhotoArchiver to change the reference for these files. This can be done quite easily by the Move image reference that youll find in the Database maintenance submenu under the file menu." I have not used this tool, but the tools I have tested in 'Database maintenance' have been automatic and quite fast and easy. One shortcoming I have identified: You cannot print images and text. Baard indicates he plans to add this feature in the future. I am going to try a workaround which will involve creating a web page and then printing the album page from the browser. By the way, Baard is in Norway not Denmark as I erroneously stated before. Today's addition to the image collection was a set of about 30 large digital stills and 8 video files of "the most photographed kids in the neighborhood." Those followed progressive backups on two CDs of images and family files collected or moved since two DVDs were made in mid-November. Sets of numbered images can be batch-renamed with date and topic using Windows XP. Edited and cropped images are usually saved in the same folder with more descriptive names and sometimes the pixel size. Not-so-good images have a code letter at the beginning of the file name to move them below the listing used for printing projects. It is very difficult to find a wanted image for a software program that requires all linked images to be kept in a single folder. There could be dozens of pictures with the same date or dozens of pictures for the same individual. One man stated that he sent a CD with 2000 images to his relatives along with the family files -- his whole project is likely limited to a single CD. I want to be able to send "all" images for a specific branch so someone can add to picture notes shared by their grandparents more than 35 years ago. What happens to PhotoArchiver or similar organizer databases if the images have to be moved to multiple, different folders? Moving and renaming pictures is a habit after seven years. (grin) It didn't take long to learn to keep file names a "reasonable" length for CD-ROM software. One error message today from a saved Internet file with an original name more like a sentence. Genealogists often report problems moving images linked to their family files when they upgrade software, change computers or reformat a hard drive. I lost 25,000 organized images on a single hard drive when it was moved to a different computer but progressive backup CDs made in 1997 are still useful. One or two CDs of historical pictures for each branch. My concern with any additional software is the amount of work required if the information has to be moved to a different product. Everyone who works with images suggests a different product or method. Simple Windows folders of organized pictures grouped by topic and date can have text files and the images can have meaningful names that allow them to be kept in order. New scans and new digital pictures are usually moved to a "permanent" folder or renamed immediately after they are added to a family project. I wouldn't be able to find WHC's "new" 1888 source documents collected in nearly random order if they were scattered all over the hard drive with topic names. 71 objects in his 1885-1888 sub-folder so it will likely be divided again. Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald Whitney" > I can Import any image (not gif or Tiff with LZW compression). Nothing really imports, however. I am about 20 days into a 60 day trial of some new software. I am usually watching for software that will meet my needs and make things easier. The need: I have many photographs (or more properly, images) saved in many files and folders all over my hard drive. These are usually saved as TIFF files and some are saved at a higher resolution so that I can manipulate copies when I need to do so. But, it is difficult for my aged brain to remember what I have and where it is located. As Elizabeth has pointed out so well, my genealogy software will take care of this problem for my family tree related photographs. But, I have been trying to find something that would handle the rest. I have checked out several "photo album" type programs, but the ones I looked at required me to JPEG all the photographs or do other things that didn't really meet my need. The software I am trying out is called BR's PhotoArchiver, version 3.5.2. The URL is http://www.br-software.com/photoarchiver.html and belongs to Baard Riiber. I think it is out of Denmark. You can check out the web site for yourself, but I'll try to give a little idea of what it does. I can Import any image (not gif or Tiff with LZW compression). Nothing really imports, however. What happens is a photo index is created which has a thumbnail of the image and links to the image wherever it is (even on a CD). You have the ability to add all sorts of descriptive information to the index. There is a bulk system to allow you to add the same information to many images at one time, such as 100 photographs that were all taken on the same vacation. The images can be identified by file name, a numbering system provided, or your own custom system. The photo index will be sorted accordingly. So, now you have these hundreds (or thousands) of thumbnails linked to all of the images on your computer and identified with all of the what, where, how, etc. information. This is where the software really shines. It has a very quick search feature that will search for almost anything you included in the identifying text. For example, I have photographs that were taken on Easter, or Christmas. I can simply search for one or the other, or both and immediately get them all. I can do the same with any surname, date, etc. A search for Eiffel gets me pictures of the Eiffel Tower I took in Paris, and also those I took in Las Vegas at the Paris Casino (that one surprised me) because I had included the word in the description. You may, of course, create as many photo indexes as you wish, but to me that defeats the value of the search feature. Or, I can quickly look over the thumbnails and be able to immediately find where an image is located in my files and folders. The program also claims to make CD,s and slide shows. I haven't gotten that far in my trial yet, but based on what I've seen so far I have no reason to doubt. On closing, support seems to be excellent. A couple of questions I had were answered promptly, by e-mail, by Baard. I hope this information helps someone on the list who has a similar need. Ron

I am the "someone" who administers this list. I DO NOT receive the "requests", a machine receives them and acts accordingly. Any thank-you's, pleases, added email addresses, etc., only serve to confuse the software that reads subscribe and unsubscribe messages. There is a problem, in that if you send the message to tech.rootsweb.com, you do not get a mail failure message of any sort. Those message get swallowed up by the machine and spit out into limbo. I have no control over that, either. I have changed the welcome messages for scanners-photos-l and scanners-photos-d, now that I know the address was changed. Sorry for any inconveniences.
