Dual boot computer with WinME and XP Pro was set up to handle a scanner purchased 1996 and an older version of OCR software that happens to work better with 1930's carbon copies of an interesting report about family farms. I think my 1997 scanner with the largest glass area still works with XP but it isn't currently connected to check. Easiest method to run old equipment and software is by keeping an older computer but the slow ME unit is getting crowded out by a newer spare computer. After several days of experiments, my technical advisor was wishing that he had started with a full retail version of XP Pro instead of the upgrade. ME was a full retail version and easier to install. Bob: This is in response to your letter of a week ago concerning Windows XP. By the time I received your letter we had already removed XP and reverted to my original program Windows 98SE. Quite a few of my programs would not work with XP, but the ones that were the clinchers were Sony Hotburn and my HP ScanJet 4C Scanner. We did not try to do anything about Hotburn, but we tried hard to make the scanner work. We downloaded new drivers. It did not work. We downloaded Service Pack 1. It still would not work. The young man doing this read everything he could, and decided that a seven year old scanner could not possiby work with XP. I have an Epson 2450 Stylus Perfection Photo Scanner that is wonderful, but for OCR scans and, also, because the HPs larger bed scans large documents, I do not want to part with my HP Scanjet. Do you think the emulation you wrote about would help that to work?My grandson will be back in a few months and maybe he can try out what you suggest. What do you think? Hi Winifred XP has a way of running programs that don't work in XP but that you know it work before installing XP. If you left click on the START button. Then hover over the 'All Programs' Icon you should see the list of programs. If you now RIGHT click the particular program you are interested in you will get another menu with 'Properties' at the bottom. Left click on properties and you will get a 'Setup Properties Window' for the program. Left click on the 'Compatability' Tag at the top and you will see a section called 'Compatability Mode' Click in the box marked 'Run this program in compatability mode for' and you can now choose the original Windows Operating system that you know the program worked in. This worked for me on a couple of old pieces of software I was loathed to loose. Dear Ann and All: This is what I have done to solve the problem of a new installation of XP. My grandson installed XP so it could be uninstall it if necessary. After he left for abroad, my granddaughter's boy friend, who has worked with computers. took over. When the HP 4c scanner would not work, we downloaded new drivers for it. but it still would not work. Then I found other programs that would not work including Sony Hotburn. He updated Winodws by installing Service Pack 1, but it was still no go. The same programs would not work including the scanner and Hotburn. He advised me to uninstall, and I agreed. Everything is running now. The salesman who has helped me for years told me not to attempt XP if I wanted my older programs and hardware to work, but I could not resist when my grandson gave me Windows XP for Christmas, and wanted to install it for me. I thought maybe he could work miracles, because he is excellent with computers. That is the story of my experience with XP Winifred

Hi, I have a HP 890C DeskJet printer. When I print a picture with it everything has too much red in it. I have installed a new print cartridge, cleaned the contacts, and downloaded the lastest drivers from HP. Nothing has helped. This is run on a Win. 98SE system. We have a couple of these same printers at work and they do the same thing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom T. Risinger Home Page: http://www.t-risinger.com/ Webmaster for Eastern Nebr. Chuck, thank you for that explanation. After doing the last upgrade, I have Win98 2nd edition, I can't access the newsgroups. This is the message I get, "MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in module INETCOMM.DLL at 018f:5ec24fd9" along with all the other x's and o's, etc. Someone did tell me of a newsgroup program to use, which I do have, but don't like it much. Maybe your suggestion will work for me, tomorrow. Thank you, Susanne
Winifred, I recommend installing SP-1 with the following WARNING: Set a RESTORE Point before you start, backup ALL data files, turn off your virus checker, disable your virus checker so that it will not start on startup, run "msconfig", check selective startup, and uncheck startup items, reboot, then run SP-1 upgrade. I received the above instructions from Microsoft AFTER I tried to run SP-1 unsuccessfully. Following the above instructions I had NO problem. I have a dialup connection so I ordered the SP-1 CD, but you can also download the update. Go to START, then HELP AND SUPPORT. Type "system restore" in the search window, read all about how to restore in XP. It's a great feature! It should work. But if it doesn't what have you lost? At most you'll have to re-install your new Windows XP. Downloading new ones form HP is the thing to do. If you need additional help, you might want to try the computer list at computers-l. If the updated Driver is issued by HP then my experience with the company tells me you will be OK. They are a very thorough Company in anything they put their name to. Only wish they would bring out a new driver for my trusty HP Scanjet 4s. One tip I will give you, is to always download these updates to a floppy and keep it in a safe place. If you ever have to rebuild/reinstall them it saves hours of download time. Your experience with Windows XP is just starting. When you register it (and its compulsory) you will start to get notification of updates which can take hours to download and there doesn't appear to be away you can save these for future use. Ann: I don't understand what you mean by "restore." Please clarify. Winifred, My tale of woe... I upgraded to ME and my EPSON 636U would not work! After downloading and installing new drivers and a long phone conversation with EPSON I got it to work. I then upgraded to XP and my troubles started again. I finally gave up and purchased an EPSON 1250 and gave my 636U to my wife. Now everything is working great! My recommendation, get and save the download, install it later, and start scanning.
