I wanted to thank everyone who helped me decide which scanner to purchase. I decided to buy a Microtek 5900 series which I purchased at Micro Center here in Houston. It was a good time to buy because of the 30 dollar rebate. Steve > > Have fun shopping and let us know what you buy & how you like it. > > GS
Elaine, Why are you trying to avoid attachments? It is possible to insert an image in a message sent as HTML similar to inserting an image in a word processor file. Mailing lists normally are set for plain text with no attachments. I prefer to receive text with pictures attached from my relatives and friends so that I can save the images. Received a holiday greeting that seems to have no way to save the picture except as a screen capture. Remember the image extension and then search the hard drive for *.JPG. Other image formats are larger and less popular for e-mail or use on web sites. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine" > copy some photographs and send them as an e-mail WITHOUT an attachment.
Hello list, I am rather new to this list. I have just been sitting back and observing and trying to learn. I need some help. I have an old Plustek Optic Pro scanner which I have mostly used to copy things onto paper. I would like to copy some photographs and send them as an e-mail WITHOUT an attachment. How do I go about doing this? I haven't even been able to bring up stuff that I thought I saved into a folder to be retrieved later. I feel like such a dummy!!!!! Is there someone on this list who could give me step by step instructions, please. Thanks, Laney
Hi Steve, I suspect it isn't going to matter much. Most flatbed scanners on the market now have dpi that far exceeds what you'll need to scan prints and my experience is that most modern scanners are reasonably good, east to install and use, and very very cheap compared to several years ago. My first flatbed cost $600 could do a max of 600 dpi and took an entire afternoon to get installed. I've usually bought Microtek scanners because I like the scanning software that comes with Microtek. However, I've also heard people say that they've had Microtek scanners with foggy glass. I also have a portable Cannon scanner that I use on the road. Here are a few things to consider: 1. Dots per inch - but look only at the physical value, not the interpolated. 1200 DPI is probably all you'll need for all except the smallest photos. If you plan to scan negatives or slides you'll need much higher DPI, but a slide scanner would be a better choice for those in my opionion. You may also want to look at color depth, 48 bit color rather than 24-bit. This will allow you to get more shades of gray or tints of color to work with. However, some older software cannot read 48-bit color. 2. Connection to the computer. USB is the easiest and the most common these days. SCSI can be a nightmare to install. There may also be some out there that will connect through the COM or LPT ports, but these will be slower than USB. Look for USB-2 compatible which is faster than the older USB. Be sure the box says it's compatible with whatever your operating system is. It's possible to download and install updated drivers, but this can be a hassle. 3. Scanning software. Unfortunately this is hard to evaluate without trying it, but some reviews may mention software. Most scanners also come with other bundled software which may or may not have appeal for you. 4. Availablity of accessories such as transparency attachments or sheet feeders if these things matter to you. 5. Glass Size - Do you want small so you can carry it with you on the road or do you need to scan originals larger than legal size paper? Does footprint on the desk matter to you? Have fun shopping and let us know what you buy & how you like it. Could you give me details of computer group and what sort of people attend Thanks Nick Ashby E.Rodier wrote: >Just returned from a presentation about scanners at the local computer >group. > > > > > > > >. >
Nick, I live in southern Alberta, a bit far for anyone in UK to come to meetings of the computer genealogy group. Group started a few years before I joined in 1992, demonstrations about genealogy software, searching online sources, family books. http://www.afhs.ab.ca/ Most people who attended the meeting already owned a scanner and some have been using scanners of various kinds since 1996. The hardest part is learning to scan for a particular purpose, usually a collection of pictures suitable for a web site or family book. That is not the same as collecting large, archival copies for printing one page at a time. Alberta Family Histories society has other meetings with various topics, most recently about the Home Children. I've been looking up some information about Guest Children who were evacuated to Canada in 1940 for a woman who lived with a doctor's family for two years when she was very young. Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Ashby" > Could you give me details of computer group and what sort of people attend
Nick, to add my two cents worth regarding your question on computer groups; We have a Kitsap Computing Seniors group. This group is 11 years old, geared towards seniors although anyone who wants to join can and designed to help seniors at a level and hassle free environment. For $20 a year membership we offer meetings with guest speakers every month except for August, classes and SIGs. Speakers include tech reps from local companies, computer manufactures, Microsoft and whoever else we can get. Naturally Microsoft speakers draw the largest audience (they come with nice raffle items!) We also have special interest groups that also meet such as genealogy, digital imaging, stock investing, hardware, and free classes such as word, windows, etc. I wish Elizabeth lived near us so as she would be a popular speaker I am sure judging from her input here. Anyway our group is one of many different types around the country. Our members are scattered as well. Kathy
My scanner is Cannon N656U and was using Win 98 at the time, 1/1/01. Since then up-graded to pen 3 and XP home. Scanner works better now than with win98. E. Rodier Thanks for responsing I feel my computer is powerful enough. It is a Pen 4 266 GHZ, with 512 memory and 120 gig harddrive. I expect in the future I would be scanning negatives. But my main purpose is to scan the old photos. Some as old as 120 years. And to attempt to restore some of them. I have Paintshop and Photoshop for the restoring but I will not be able to decide which one I will use until I purchase the scanner. I have seen scanners with 2400 by 4800 with 48 bit true color. (if I remember correctly). But I wonder if I need this much dpi. I am thinking of storing them in TIFF not JPEG work on them and then burn them to CD's to distribute to family members. I know TIFF creates very large files, but from my limited knowledge it also retains the photo without degrading it, each time it is worked on. Just returned from a presentation about scanners at the local computer group. One suggestion was to place the items to be scanned near the *middle* of the glass. A particular scanner can be tested with lined graph paper to see if there are differences near the edges. Do you need to scan any film, negatives or slides? If yes, there are additional considerations. Big files require a powerful computer to edit and an advanced backup system. DVD writer or at least a CD writer recommended. For enlargements of photos, there may be some advantages to an expensive scanner. For family projects, the completed images are usually printed 6 inches wide or smaller as part of a family story. Images for web sites are usually quite small so that they can be viewed by home page visitors using a dial up connection. I get good results with Microtek scanners. The images on the computer screen are good and little editing is required unless the original is damaged. Some budget-priced scanners have less control over the scan area and settings. I doubt very much that HP Laserjet III could be made compatible with XP. The HP III is quite an old printer, although it is a very good one. Dear Elizabeth and Bob: Your letters sound like my HP ScanJet 4c should work. We did download the driver listed for it to work in XP from the Hewlett Packard website, but could not get it to work even with Service Pack 1 installed. The young man helping me did not know anything about emulation. Since I am legally blind with limited vision, I will try it again sometime in the future when I can get mor help from a more knowledgable person. My grandson will be back next summer, and perhaps he can make it work then. In the mentime, since my days are getting shorter and I want to utilize them well, I will continue to use Windows 98 SE. Thank you so much for your helpful advice and encoouragement. I am keeping your letters for future use. They are for write protection like the sliding part on a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk. Using the sticky on a special spot on the card will prevent rewriting over the pictures recorded thereon. Messing with my first ever digicam. Question: The Smart Media card that came with my camera had small round silver stickies in the package. What in the world are these for? I see a spot on the smart card where they would fit. Thanks. Deb
Hi Winifred I don't know what to advice. The XP Compatibility tag did work for me but only on programs not hardware. I have just had a look at the HP site again and it definitely says that the ScanJet 4C is supported and there is a Driver and Instruction sheet available for down load. This is a large file 19 Kb so it might take some time to down load it. I would have a go again. HP have a technical support service on their web page if you get stuck. I had to fork out £173 because my Scanjet 4s isn't supported and it hurts.
