I just bought a Canon i960. I have not printed any text with it and may not as I still have my old HP that will probably do better for that. It does excellent photograhps both 4x6 and 8x12. It does not need the extra tab on the paper to print edge to edge. Canon makes an i860 that may be better for doing both text and photos. It has one less color cartridge an the black cartridge is bigger in the i860. For pictures I have found it best to use the same brand of paper that you have printer. HP paper in the Canon printer was a soggy and ugle mess. Tom Beth <[email protected]> wrote: Can anyone please give me their recommendations for a good printer? Can someone help? I have Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE. When I try to open a picture it says 'could not open "c:/... because an error occurred while printing'. Thanks.
did you scan it into LE5 or are you just trying to open it? You may have to re-install your LE5. It appears to me that there is a conflict in your software. I have never had this problem. . . so those are my best guess. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 19, 2004 12:31 PM Subject: [SP] Re: SCANNERS-PHOTOS-D Digest V04 #4 > Can someone help? The software with it is great and it includes Adobe Elements PhotoShop 2 - if you want to touch up. I really haven't used Adobe, the slides came thru without need for touch-ups. Julie, why not enquire at a good quality photo lab nearby to see if they can make contact prints or small enlargements from your negatives? You will need to look for a lab that is truly professional, not the "one hour" type lab. Most of those "quickie" type labs are ill-equipped to cope with anything other than the common variety film sizes. It may cost you a little, but you will then have quality prints to scan (as normal) into your computer. Lance Got Outlook? Hi Lance Thanks for the suggestion. I did consider doing this, but as I have quite a few negatives and photographs (my father was a keen amateur photographer) it seems like buying a scanner to do this would be a good investment, provided I can get one at the right price. Listers, O to be able to buy goods at US prices, In Australia I purchased a 1650 for double this price 12 months ago in normal use I am happy with it. I just had a look at Epson site in Aust and they only have 1660 photo & 1670 photo. No price listed. This is away from what I wanted to put forward. With 1600 series at least the back light in the lid is max 60mm wide and is OK when scanning Slides and 35mm Film Negs. with the included Transparency Unit. But what if you have the older negs that are greater than the even smallish 90mm x 60mm negatives. To scan these you turn off the Thumbnail Preview and scan one at a time. I have found this very time consuming and at times very difficult to centre the negative. With silver side up locating it on the flat bed (I try to use a piece of glass to hold it in place) so as to scan the section of importance I also find to be very frustrating. These are also at original size, to look at any detail you are required to redo a preview. This requires marking the size and doing another Preview. Add this to the Preview speed, determined by the size of the Resolution. I try to preview at low Res and when scanning up grade the size of the resolution. Does anybody have any thoughts on this. There are other scanners on the market, but this one works great and is priced right. You can read more about it on the Epson Scanner site at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=ye s&oid=35836301 I also bought a 2.0 USB card with 3 plug-in slots since my computer came with the 1.0 USB. It works either way, the 2.0 increases speed a little. I have been waiting for the Epson printer, R300. It is a six color printer that says that it prints labels on "ink jet printable" CD's. Retail is about $180. It is sold out all over the country. My order at OfficeMax is 5 weeks old now. The Epson website store is also out. Everyone is waiting for re-supply. Makes me wonder if there was a problem with it and they are re-tooling something. Epson responded to my email, stating they were just sold out and the retail outlets would get re-suppy before the Epson on-line store. See at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=ye s&oid=37472318 Hope this helps. These are my thoughts and not a commercial.
Julie, No single scanner "does it all." Purchased a Transparent Media Adaptor in 1996 to go with a large flatbed scanner when any equipment over 300 dpi was too expensive to consider for home use. Useful for large 2 1/4 inch slides or negatives but not adequate for 35mm slides or film. Original flatbed scanner with the longest glass is still in the computer room but hasn't been connected recently. Would probably still work with the dual boot computer that has Microsoft ME as well as XP Pro. TMA is like a full scanner in the lid and only works with one model of flatbed, not the 600 dpi purchased after the price dropped. The first film scanner was limited to 35mm cardboard or thin plastic slides and cut 35mm film. Maximum 2400 dpi, about 16 mb file from an uncropped slide. Other models can handle uncut film or have adaptors for APS film. Favorite flatbed scanner is a Microtek 5700 with a media adaptor built into the lid. It isn't as good for slides but does allow scans of "snapshot" size negatives. Some of the genealogy source documents must be scanned in two parts. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julie Marriott" > I have some black and white negatives from the 1940's and 1950's which I > would love to be able to scan into my computer. I have a Canon 9900F and love it. Bob, You unknowingly just made my day! I too have a new Epson Perfection 3170 Photo that I only picked up to scan snapshots. The "extras" that came with it were stored away for some other time when I thought I might fiddle with them...or not. Now I've got the itch to dig out the boxes and boxes of slides gathering dust and see what magic might be preformed. Tom

Yes, we have a strnage relationship with Rootsweb...last I knew we were listed under "Miscellaneous" in the mailing lists...I complained, and thought we should be "technical"...haven't been back to look. At any rate, word of mouth seems to keep us going. And please, don't send private messages, unless it has to do with private genealogical research...we're all learning here, and we don't consider comments and recommendations to be "ads". Keep on talkin!
