    3. I would like to hear some opinions on which scanners do a good job of colour portraits. In particular, which scanners will give an accurate colour of faces, hair, etc. when scanning a graduation, or wedding photo, etc. I'm not terribly concerned about whether or not it has a slide adapter. I now have a HP 3400c flatbed scanner, and I'm getting very frustrated with it. Maybe it's worn out. Of course, there's also the streaky glass on the underside. It scans great scenery pictures if there are many many different colours in the photo. A child sitting in a flower bed looks great. When I scan a colour portrait, the results are always too red or purple. Someone with brown hair ends up with auburn hair. The blacks are a very deep burgundy-black. Faces look like they have a sunburn. I've tried adjusting the colour in the pre-scan by adding a little yellow and/or green, but of course, that changes the other colours too. Thanks, Kathy

    3. Hi Scott Thanks for getting back to me. I think that the scanner is a straight PS3000 with no extra letters but will check more closely tomorrow. I do have the Serial Number to hand it is 263706. If that helps. Do you have any experience of this particular scanner? 3. Hi Sarah, I was doing something similar with layers yesterday with psp7 and learnt a bit about using layers. When you paste, you can paste as a layer (sometimes this is greyed out and I could only sometimes work out why - I think the base image has to be a format like psp that saves layers and also I think it greyed sometimes if I hadn't saved for awhile) You can also paste as a transparent selection. This seems to wipe the background colour - which was fine for one of my projects as I was working with black and white maps. It is easier to place a transparent selection because you can see through it but once placed, you can't pick it up again and move it like you can if it's on another layer. Have you checked out the Help file and tutorials? I expect you'll find help there. 3. Sarah, What you want to do is put each desired element of the five separate images (what you call "pictures") onto five separate layers. As you have found out, putting the whole image on a layer merely hides the layer below. Although, you could lower the opacity of the top layer to reveal the lower layer, that isn't very desirable for obvious reasons. Even then, you wouldn't necessarily have to use layers to accomplish what you are trying to do, though it does make it somewhat easier. The main advantage to using layers is that you don't have to make changes permanent until you are finished with the whole. Anyway, start by creating a new "blank" image of the size you want the final image to be. Then open your first image and, using your chosen "selection" tool, trace the outline of the element you wish to incorporate into your crest. Copy the selection into memory (for "cut and paste" operation) or drag it to your blank image. Then create a new layer, go to your second image, "select" element, and copy (drag) it to second layer. Then do the same thing for numbers three through five layers. Now, you can move each layer around to your desired position. Finally, either flatten the image to save HD space or leave layers intact for future silliness. Piece of cake. To make a crest you must take the five separate pictures, or parts (shield, mantlling, two devices, and a banner) and arrange them to form one picture. Some parts may overlap so they have to be transparant (I think to overlap without covering the other parts). After one picture is made consisting of all five separate pictures, then the surname is added to the banner and the crest must be resized and saved. All I can do so far, is browse to get the first picture, and when I browse to get the second to add, it covers the first. I need to know how to get them to layer and learn to see all the layers instead of some covering up the others. any help would be appreciated. 3. Under my Start Programs I found Microsoft Office Tools. Amongst these is Microsoft Office Document Imaging and Microsoft Office Document Scanning. You can work from a tif image of a text (I haven't tried this - but that's what the HELP says) or scan the text direct. I don't know which versions of Office they come with. I have Microsoft Office XP Professional with Publisher Cheers, Cathy At 04:21 9/03/2004 -0800, you wrote: >Dear Cathy, >Are you talking about the "Import from Scanner" in Microsoft Office Word >Tools? Otherwise I'm very happy with my Epson 2400 photo which I got mainly for photo and slide scanning. 3. My old Microtek had a BLACK pressure pad . . . it worked great. So when I scan newspaper and other items which tend to show bleed-thru from the opposite side, I place a sheet of black paper behind the text. It tends to reduce the contrast slightly, but there is no problem with the bleed-thru confusing the OCR engine. 3. The best time to buy software like OmniPage is at the time of a new release. Thought I was saving a few dollars downloading a different OCR program to work with XP but purchased OmniPage 14 upgrade recently by mail. After it arrived, one of the local stores was selling version 12. Try black or grey construction paper behind a thin original if printing shows through a scan. The craft store sells large sheets of thin foam that are large enough for the area of scanner glass. Scanned a set of keepsake items using various colors of towels as background because the lid could not be closed. A few were photographed with an early digital camera. The pattern of great-grandmother's quilt was a bit too large for the scanner glass. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- > I've had good luck in the past with my OmniPage, but when I bought my new > computer with XP I lost the ability to scan text completely. 3. On an older computer, I had to OCR one page at a time. With a newer XP computer and 640 RAM, it is still necessary to close and reopen the scanner software after a few large scans. Usually I want a plain text copy plus individually scanned images if the original has mixed layout like a magazine. G85 on a different computer here is used mostly for color photocopies and faxing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bvma" > Thanks for all the help on scanning text.
