    1. RE: [SP] FW: How do you e-mail scanned material?
    2. Paula Hinkel
    3. Scanning is only half the process. After the image is scanned, you may want to manipulate it (resize it, retouch it if it's a photograph, etc.) and save it in some usable format (for example, jpg). I use a free downloadable program called Irfanview (www.irfanview.com) to do most of my work with graphics. I do have a couple other programs when I need more sophisticated photo fixes. If you're working with a photo for example, you'd scan it, open up your Irfanview (or other photo software), fiddle with it to get it right, and then save the image. You'd attach it to an outgoing email using the "attach" or "insert file" or "send photo" option that you have on the program you use for your email. -----Original Message----- From: Donna [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2005 9:31 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [SP] FW: How do you e-mail scanned material? 3. I have a Canon 9900 scanner and a Canon i860 printer. I thought everything was fine until my friend took a magazine page and Scanned and printed it. Did not import it into any other program like Adobe Photo Shop. It came out exactly like the magazine - color wise. Not true for my Canon duo. In order for it to look like the magazine Full color I have to import it into Photo Shop and then hit the "level"s adjustment and then tone down perhaps the reds. Any suggestions. I did call Canon and they told me that I should print using their Canon Easy Print program, not the print program that the computer defaults to which is also theirs. This is crazy. We spent a lot of time choosing our Scanner and printer and purchased a Canon because we thought the color was the best. For 20 years we had been HP customers. I shouldn't have to mess with and really don't know how to mess with the adjustments. Help. When I do use it, it is just a hit & miss thing. I keep trying until I get something that looks acceptable. 3. Pat, Simple steps? Okay. 1. Read the Manual cover-to-cover -- get to know the machine you purchased. 2. While reading the Manual, watch for something to do with "Scan Material," "Source Material," or similar language. Your choices would be something like: "Reflective," "Negative," or "Positive." (Your mileage may vary.) Of course, noting your aversion to reading the Manual, you could always use your image editing software (that's the program you are printing from) to simply "Invert" or "Reverse" the image. 1. Scanning to e-mail
    2. Garry F Bell
    3. Hi Hope this message makes sense! For some time I have scanned Genealogical magazines using the e-mail facility on my HP Scanjet 5370C; and then save the pdf file which enables me to search for words in the text using Adobe's Find tool. However lately I have not been able to use the Find tool as it tells me that there is no specific word when I know there is. This has occurred on my last few scannings. Anyone know what the problem could be? I know if ii was scanned in bmp I would not be able to "search" the pdf document. I cannot find anywhere where I can confirm what the e-mail messages are scanned in (ie jpeg; gif or whatever). If that problem can't be solved I will have to scan them normally as separate pages which would give me up to 40 pdf pages/files within one folder. I presume there is software out there where I can combine the referred to pages. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time Garry New Zealand

    3. Hi Garry, I don't know the facility you refer to - but if the pdf file was able to search for words using the Adobe "find" then you were using some OCR (optical character recognition) software, not any of the graphics formats you mention (bmp, jpg, gif, etc). Hope that helps you to refind the right options. 3. Happy Holidays to you all. I agree - Rootsweb Review is well worth receiving each week. I have had , for a few years, an Epsom Color Stylus 400 printer. I have been very satisfied with it until the past couple of months when the colour copying leaves a lot to be desired. The reds are more a purple is one example of things not printing correctly. The cartridge was only changed a relatively short time ago but admittedly has quite a bit of use. Is it a sign that the cartridge needs renewing (no lights flashing <g>) or is the Printer starting to die on me? 3. Hi Nick, Output resolution for what purpose? Not sure which setting you are talking about but resolution required depends on the use you plan to make of the image. For a quick useful summary of some of the issues see http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/tipsPictures.asp BTW - I use Paint Shop Pro 7 and am aware that it's probably time to update. You'll find image fixing much improved - and it sounds like you have a much more recent computer - or at least monitor than your software.
