    3. Hi List, As I newly became list administrator, I wanted to double check the "TOPIC" information on the Scanner-Photo" information page. The name of the list kind of suggests that only scanners and photos should be discussed. This is the definition of the "topic" taken from the information page: "Topic: A mailing list dedicated to support of genealogists who use scanners and/or digital cameras for documentation. It suggests hardware and software, digital techniques, and tips". I think this gives us a lot of areas to discuss. A lot more than what I envisioned at first. Like Kraig said, anyone have any suggestions on using digital cameras to copy books, documents, etc? I have an older Sony Mavica (MVC-FD73) that uses the 3 1/2 disk. Maybe I don't really know how to accomplish it, but I have tried to photo copy, book pages & it doesn't come out very well. Maybe tell us what kind of cameras, settings, etc. to use. Donna

    3. I have an HP 5550c and basically love it. It does not get along well with my digital camera software. I have started downloading pictures from the camera by allowing the computer to believe it is a removable disk. Every since I started doing that, I've had no problems in that area. I do have another occasional problem that I have no clue exactly what causes it. For whatever reason, my computer can not find my scanner. I end up having to uninstall it, unplug it, reboot, install it, plug it in and reboot and then all is well until it throws a fit again. I use my scanner for business and I believe the scanner is on its way to replacing a fax machine. I know I would much rather get scanned and emailed paperwork than faxed. They are cleaner and easier to read. I also scan fabric for my quilt software. It is a great way to show a friend or relative exactly what you are doing. Between the digital camera (with macro mode) and scanner, you can take pictures of documents to import into a genealogy program or to send to someone. It is hard choosing between which works best whether to take a digital picture of an old picture or whether to scan it. One project still in my thinking cap, it to take pictures of flowers and create a collage to scan to turn into fabric wallpaper. I think I'll also scan a sea of rose petals that I'll scatter on the glass. I'll drape different fabric on the top in order to get the background I want. The same could be done of family members to make a quilt or place mats or coasters. All you have to remember is that the bottom becomes the top. :) Since quilters can create fabric via the use of an ink jet printer, a scanner is used for layering different things to get one of a kind fabric. You are limited only by your imagination whether for business or hobby for just about any kind of craft. 2. Kraig Jones
    3. Hi, I've used this list a few times in the past. 1. I've shared a few tips on using a digital camera instead of a scanner to copy 35mm slides. I had a box full of old slides that I wanted to copy. After a little research and experimenting, I bought and used a digital camera to take pictures of the slides, and got at least as good results as with a flatbed scanner with a film attachment. And now I have a camera that is a lot more useful than a single-purpose film scanner would be. 2. I've read this list (and others) looking for genealogy-related uses for digital cameras and scanners. I know people use them at libraries, though the historical society that I visit here is very fussy about cameras, computers, or anything that you might want to bring in. Anyone have ideas or experiences? Kraig __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

    2. Bob Kirk
    3. Well that got things moving. Here's my two penneth. I use a Visioneer Strobe Pro Scanner which scans my documents into Paperport version 7.0 . This is a through feed scanner and I probably do about 12,000 scans a year mainly of A4 size and in B&W line art. Occasionally the scanner will loose its port on the computer and freeze. I then have to shut everything down and reboot the computer whereupon it finds the port and everything is OK until next time. I'm not sure if this fault is a function of the Scanner or Paperport. Has anyone else had this problem? I notice that Paperport is now upto version 10 and wonder if an upgrade might solve the problem? Incidentally I would Highly recommend Paperport as a filing system for ALL your scanned material. 3. Hi, True, in which case I would send it as an attachment. It depends on what the sender has and what the receiver has. As implied, there is much more involved than just sending something scanned. 2. Donna
    3. Hi List, While looking at the stats for this list I found that there are 257 people listed as subscribers (List & Digest mode). Now that is a lot of people. On Rootsweb mailing lists that is considered a sizeable list. A lot of lists are around 50 to 150 people. With 257 people we ought to be able to have a very good discussion on Scanning & Photos. I don't think we are all experts. I know I'm a long way off. Donna

One thing for sure to do is keep the scanner glass clean from fingerprints, smudges, etc. HTH Jabe Donna wrote: >Hi List, > >While looking at the stats for this list I found that there are 257 >people listed as subscribers (List & Digest mode). 3. Hello, I usually save the scanned material to my hard drive (if only temporarily) and then send it via email as embedded in the email or as an attachment. It depends on what you are sending? You can embed it in a Word document or send it as an attachment (usually as a .jpg file). There are many ways to send something scanned.-- I'm open for further discussion of this or anything else!! 3. Hi list, It's a sad thing when we start criticizing each other harshly for no apparent reason. You know the old saying--""If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"". If anyone else receives a message like Sally did, would you please forward the message to my address? [email protected] . Acts like this will not be tolerated on this list. I also received a message from this person, Andrew or Walter, which ever he wants to go by. If anyone on this list doesn't want to see the problems and possible constructive advice from others, then please just unsubscribe yourself, before I do it for you. Lets just try to help each other. 3. I have a HP 5470 scanner, and I love the buttons on it, scanning to E-Mail is very easy, also the scan to printer, which are the two I have used most. >From within Photo Elements I "acquire" a picture from the scanner. Also from within the program Legacy, I acquire pictures from the scanner. If very much work is needed on the picture, I go through Elements. Its true you can really learn only by doing, but a few tips are helpful. I haven't quite mastered storing my pictures in the best places, but I have worked on it, and making some progress, but the accumulation needs more attention. Helen Allen

I use mine very little. I want to use it a lot more than I do, but I seldom get around to scanning things. I have hundreds of slides that I would like to scan. Now I know that a flat bed scanner is not supposed to be the best for this, but the few I have scanned seem acceptable after using Paint Shop Pro on them. I still don't understand, after all this time and all the studying I have done, the settings to use to get a certain size picture, etc. Evelyn

    3. ----- Original Message ----- > Subject: How do you e-mail scanned material? it is easy, just remember to keep it simple. My scanner is an HP 5370C and it does everything that I want it to do. 1. scan the material into your computer and save it as a JPG file unless I'm going to print the material, then I save it in the largest file that I can print. I then print it and usually delete it or save it to a CD. but not on my hard drive. big photos can fill up a hard drive in a hurry. a CD burner is a must if you want to save everything and then you can move it to other computers for work. 2. I then bring it into Photoshop, but you can use PSP or some other program that lets you resize your sannned material. I also adjust my material, i.e. crop it, lighten or darken, "burn" the edges, etc. 3. resize it to 72 megapixels and save it. The reason that you save it as 72 mps is so that the email will not be so large that it will take forever to send and receive. 72 mps is the smallest file that you can save and make it look just great on the computer. If you are sending a photo that you want the receiving party to be able to print it, then you should save it in the largest file that party can print it in. . . . such as . . . 300 mps and as a TIFF in lieu of JPG. 4. the program that I use lets me send it as an attachment. Is that as clear as mud? LOL If you have specific questions that you don't want to discuss in the group, just send me email direct and I will try to help you. Jake
