Meates' article "Taking a Y-DNA Test, What Can be Expected" contains a lot of useful information that explains the pitfall of 12 marker only testing and explains in an excellent manner what 37+ marker testing provides in separating out family members. Meates' illustrates the short falls of initial 12 marker testing and documents the necessity in this approach of searching the Y-Base, Y search and SMGF (12-18 marker search bases) usage to try an connect to a surname which not often matches to your desired surname.
