Hi Donna, this statement is very true.. I've got letters to prove it.. My ancestor William W. Martin wrote many letters to his wife Sarah Elizabeth and they talked at length about the status of the crops. There is no mention of any slaves in these letters, in fact she was quite put out that he was fighting at all when he was much needed at home. Sandy
