    3. Greetings, An ancestor of mine, Carey Cox Sr., a Revolutionary War soldier, died in 1814 (in Putnam Co., GA) but was buried on the plantation of his son Carey Cox, Jr. which was near present day Mountain Creek, SC (Anderson Co.) according to a website I found which reads: Carey Cox (Coxe) born: October 1736 in Orange County, Virginia died: 24 March 1814 in Stanfordville, Putnam County, Georgia "Stanfordville prior to 1840 was also called Devil's Half Acre, and was a place where gamblers, cockfighters, and drunkards came on weekends to drink, race, gamble and fight chickens and each other." (Eatonton Messenger, 26 July 1960) Moved c. 1788 to South Carolina, recorded in the Edgefield Dist. in the 1790 Census (he received a land grant after the war in the amount of 464 acres in Edgefield on 5 September 1791); moved to Warren County, Georgia by 1795 and Putnam County, Georgia in 1807. 1830 Jones County Georgia Census lists Carey Cox Jr. and two of his brothers-in-law nearby, Asa Wall and Sion Hill. Military Service: Revolutionary War - North Carolina Line Religious Affiliation: He was a Primitive Baptist Minister; member of William Creek Baptist Church in Warren Co., Georgia. Buried on the plantation of his son Cary, Jr., which is now part of the Ocene National Forest (Mountain Creek, Edgefield County, S.C.) ___ Above it states something about "Ocene National Forest" near Mountain Creek. The Forest Service knows nothing of this. Is there anyone with local knowledge who can assist me in locating this site? I plan on visiting Georgia and SC on a genealogy expedition this fall. Thanks! 3. Just hazarding a guess, but I would think it means Oconee National which is in present-day Oconee Co., SC, and was earlier a part of Pickens Dist., and prior to that, a part of Old Pendleton Dist., SC. Hope this helps! It is an old Indian name and is pronounced w/both "o's" and the "e's" sounded as long letters (oh-kon-ee).
