There seem to be 2 possibilities: --- they may have arisen from my ancestors, the Hiott/Hyott family of Little Pee Dee River, SC (modern Dillon). These people later spread to Lee Co., Kershaw Co., etc. as Hyatt. My branch, however, migrated to Colleton Co., SC and keep the Hiott spelling. --- they may have come from the Hiett family that settled in Greenville Dist., SC, about 200+ years ago, who were descended from "Quaker" John Hiett of Pennsylvania. For reasons not clear, a majority of the people began to spell their name "Hiott" in the early 1800s. This question is a puzzle that should yield answers, if someone from the Anderson area would dig into it. I have visited a couple of Hiott reunions in Piedmont, SC, held annually by descendants of Deal Hiott. The earliest that this branch of Anderson Hiotts can go back in their records is Marques Lafayette Hiott, b. 1829, d. 1868. There is a tombstone in the cem. of Mt. Pisgah Bapt. Church, Anderson Co., with "W.E. Hiott (1827-1877), son of E.R. Hiott" carved into the stone. Who were these very early Hiotts? Please contact me at hiott@gosiggy.com David Hiott
