    1. RE: [SCAnderson] Cox family of Anderson County
    2. Martha Boggs
    3. Thanks, La Vera. I have seen the Gambrell name near COX in the censuses. At first I had thought that my Beverly might be a son of the Beverly whose will was written in 1796, and that might be right. He names his wife Mary and mentions the upbringing and schooling of his children. This leads me to believe his children were all quite young. Maybe he was the father of my Beverly who was born in 1793. Does anyone know the maiden name of his wife Mary? My Beverly married Celia Johnston/Johnson about 1814, about the time he was discharged from service in the War of 1812. I believe one of his sons was Dempsey COX, because he lived near Beverly. The military records say he and Celia had six children. Celia died about 1842/3 and Beverly married Sarah Ann MARTIN in 1843. I descend from this marriage. 3. Dear Martha, Good for you for taking on Ancestry.com. I've pointed out a lot of things to them also related to their census data concerning the Major and Hendricks families. Just like you the Hendricks in Pendleton in 1790 are in Georgetown. In Newberry, Major family members are left out and recorded as to their given name incorrectly. Ancestry.com pays no attention to correcting errors in their census records. Their search software has numerous other errors such as multiple given names you can't find by a line to line search. I have access to both Ancestry.com through the LDS chrch and the HeritageQuest files through the local Library and I spend numerous hours just checking and cross checking census records when I'm trying to find someone. 1. Re: [SCAnderson] Need help.
    2. Herbert Hendricks
    3. Dear Joyce, It depends upon the time period. When the census was taken people in SC were listed as being in a certain regiment which denoted their location. You can correlate this by looking at the census records for Belton, Anderson Co., SC at the top of the census page for the time period of your referenced data. From some time after the RW to 1868 SC men 18-45 were required to serve in a militia unit. Data on these service records are hard to find. However there is a book SOUTH CAROLINA'S ANTEBELLUM MILITIA by Michael E. Stauffer which shows the information I am talking about. Finding any records is another thing. Best bet as a first start would be to search http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/default.asp<http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/default.asp> for the person you seek and the unit you are looking for information on.
