    1. [SCANDERS] Hanvey Family
    2. Monte A. Hart
    3. Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson?read=1394 Surname: Hanvey ------------------------- Hi Donna: First, let me introduce myself, I am Monte Arthur Hart and a Hanvey family descendent and researcher. I have been working on the Hanvey Family history for over fourty years and am a descendant of William Hanvey, who was born ca. 1740 in the Kingdom of Ireland. I am constantly striving to add any Hanvey descendant of any connected line no matter how distant. I would like to correspond, exchange data, and ideas with anyone of the Hanvey family (any and all branches). Especially, would like to exchange information on the ancestors or descendants of William Hanvey. William Hanvey was most likely born in County Down in the Kingdom of Ireland ca 1740 and was certainly the immigrant ancestor of the great Hanvey Family originating in the Colony of South Carolina. He and his wife, Sarah, whose maiden name is unknown, arrived with their young daughter, Jane, at Charles Towne in the Province of South Carolina on Thursday - 19 February 1767. Sarah was born ca 1741 and Jane was born ca 1764. William and his family were among a group of poor Irish Protestants who arrived on the ship, Earl of Hillsborough. The vessel had sailed from Belfast in the Kingdom of Ireland on 30 November 1766. William received a 250 acre Royal land grant in the Long Cane Section, near the Belfast Township of South Carolina and his descendants have sped to all parts of the county. I have over 6000 records and much reference data on individuals related to this line. I will gladly correspond with anyone interested these lines. I have put together a fairly complete set of data on the various branches that stayed in South Carolina, but lack some data on the branches that moved to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, etc.. However, I can't identify your "Unknown Hanvey" from the data you gave alone, maybe, if you could provide me more specific data on your Hanvey family line, I could identify it and be of more assistance. What I am asking is that you provide me information on - birth, death, marriage dates and locations. If you know any locations, or places any of the people you mentioned lived or died at, that might give me a clue as to what family group you belong to. With this kind data on your ancestors and their families, if you have it, I more than likely can tie you family to my Hanvey data. If I am successful in identifying your family line, I will provide you with an ancestor listing that shows your direct line back to William Hanvey of 1740. And if you are more deeply interested in genealogy, I would of course be glad to exchange data more extensively on the Hanvey family. I hope to hear from you soon and as I said, I would be most happy to exchange information. Monte A. Hart 105 James Street Easley, S.C. 29642 Mhart96@aol.com

    2. Susan Johanson
    3. Cordelia, Are you talking about the 1800 Old Pendleton census that is in book form with comments? I have looked at that. My J. B. Clarkes are John Baylis Clarke, Sr. and Jr. I know about the Christopher Clark family and I don't think that they are part of that immediate family. I know John was born in SC c1791, but he is not in Anderson in the 1830 census and first shows up there in 1833 at an estate sale. He starts paying taxes there in 1836, the same year he bought land. He could have been in Greenville because he married Jennie Sammons and the Sammons/Salmon family was in Greenville. There are three John Clarkes in the 1830 Greenville census, but I have not been able to look at a full copy to see if one of the last two is mine. 1830 CLARK JOHN T. Greenville County SC 290 Greenville District 1830 CLARK JOHN Greenville County SC 290 Greenville District 1830 CLARK JOHN Greenvill County SC 312 Greenville District John Clarkes are very hard to trace. This family did spell their name with an "e" and the end, and they were not farmers but had a trade. Sr. was a carpenter and cabinet maker and Jr. was a merchant tailor. Thanks for your interest!! 3. Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson?read=1393 Surname: Cox ------------------------- Hi, Liz, Thanks for your response. I am trying to determine if my great grandfather was one of the children of John and Sarah Cox. All our records indicate that his name was Rial Cox; however, some in the family believe he was Azariah (or Azarial). Even if this is the case we still have a problem because John Cox, in his will, list all his hiers as "son" or "daughter" except Azariah to whom he simply states "next I give to Azariah Cox sixty dollars when he arrives at twenty one years of age." My concern is two fold: 1. Is Azariah (or Azarial) the same as Rial Cox, and 2. if so, why is he not listed in John Cox's will as a "son"? If you have any ideas on this they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mac

Not sure if they were married in Oconee/Anderson or Picken's County, SC. In 1912, would there have been an application for the license?? Any help will be appreciated. Vivian cpvp@aol.com

    1. Re: [SCANDERS] Clark Land transfers
    2. Susan, Wm.C. Stewart's 1800 Census Analysis has several entries for Clark(s) and Clarke(s). He seems to treat them as one and the same. Could your John B. have been Bolen (Bolin) Clark(e). He is in the 1800 census: p. 14 00100-00100-00 p. 58 John Clark 00010-11010-00 He mentions Micajah Clarke * Bowling of Pickens doubtless were of the family of Christopher Clarke of Hanover (Louisa Co.) VA who died 28 May 1754, but the writer (Wm. C. Stewart) has not traced the relationship. Now, I certainly do not want to put a damper on Mr. Stewart's work. It is an excellent inquiry with results. I do have trouble sometimes with his "leaps of faith." When I bought my copy of his work in 1968, I wrote to him and we carried on a correspondence over a period of several months. He relied sometimes, too much, on Edson's Stewart Clan Magazine. Stewart admitted he had used, with permisiion, some of Edson's material. Wm. C. Stewart had letters from an a great uncle to his father, written years earlier, and he was searching for a Monroe Stewart's roots, which he thought might have some connection to Tippah Co., MS. So far as I know, he never made the connection. Cheers, Cordelia I would add that if you have Pendleton connections, the book originally sold for $5 when I ordered it directly from the National Genealogical Society of Washington, D. C. Whether it is still available, I do not know, but I suspect that it is. Probably worth ten times what FTM discs are worth. (S'cuse the editorial comment. csholem)
