    1. Re: [SCANDERS] Anderson Co./Hencoop Co./Rocky River
    2. I think that the Co. should be Creek. Hencoop Creek runs off of Rocky River in the Martin District according to the 1877 map of Anderson County. Rocky River was the boundary between Hall District and Martin District. I see where a J. Hanks owned land on Hencoop Creek right before it becomes (or rather these two creeks become Hencoop) Cherokee Creek and what looks like Cook Creek. To repeat myself: Hencoop Creek is in the Martin District; Rocky River is the boundary between Hall and Martin Districts. Hope this helps. A. Deason Smith SC

Can someone who does, tell me if James T. Hanks was listed as a Confederate soldier from Anderson County? By family tradition, he made hats for the Confederate Army. Does anyone have information to support this? I would like to hear from anyone researching James T. Hanks or anyone in his family.

Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson?read=1422 Surname: Hanks ------------------------- I have information stating that in 1853 Luke Hanks II disposed of acreage "on Hencoop Co. of Rocky River. I was under the impression that all of Luke Hanks' land was located in Anderson County, but I can't think of anything else that "co." would represent other than county. Can someone tell me where Hencoop Co. is located? The sale of this land is reportedly substantiated on pg. 363 of a Deed Book, however, the info doesn't state that this deep book is in Anderson County. Also, can someone tell me if Rocky River runs through the Martin Dist. Any help will be appreciated.

(See the History of Anderson Book) then I'll tell you much more. Yes, I know the Junkin family was in Anderson. I have acquired a lot on the Cummins family as I've researched my Dean family. I also have a lot on the James family (Gwendolyn m. Samuel Dean and Mary m. Harmon Cummins). The Vandiver book gives a lot of good info but like everything else, facts given 2nd(3rd)hand, "that's not quite the whole story". Yes, much more of the Dean family remained in Anderson County that Mrs. Vandiver indicated. After all they even had a small town of them. Dean Station. Your Harmon Cummins lived to be quite old and many of his children remained in Anderson in the 1800's. Contact me if you're interested in Deans.

    2. Which Smith Chapel? There was one that disbanded before the turn of the 20th century. It was called Smith Methodist Chapel # 2 to seperate it from the other. The other, I think is toward Lake Hartwell from Anderson. Sorry I can't help any more. A. Deason Smith SC Elrod, Smith, Howard, Skelton, Leonard, Duncan, Deason

    2. I have a partial record of a marriage of J. P. Snell of Mecklenburg Co. , NC and Tippah Co., MS that suggest his first wife may have been a Miss Tims. James Pringle Snell's son James Quay Snell's TX death certificate says that his mother was a Miss Tims. Does this connect with any of your Timms? Cordelia

    2. Dean Craft
    3. Thought I would post this since I have seen no prior references to it. Dean Craft w4ihk@mindspring.com * * * * * * * * * * Anderson, South Carolina, at one time in the past, operated a facility known as "The County Home". This facility had responsibility for the overall care of those who could not provide for themselves or who had little or no assistance available through family or friends. There was a cemetery associated with the facility but it had been long forgotten until the 1999 time frame. The cemetery was rediscovered as land was cleared and construction started on a group of convention and recreational facilities. Small ground level stones have been placed on each spot that has been identified as a grave. These stones contain only a simple floral scroll. To the extent possible, those buried in the cemetery have been identified. Each individual has been remembered by having their name placed on a plaque that is attached to a single monument. Each plaque contains 4 names. The Anderson County Home Cemetery is located approximately 4 miles north of the center of the city of Anderson. >From the County Court house, travel north for three miles on North Main Street to the intersection of Mall Road (on your left). Turn left into Mall Road and travel (to the 3rd traffic light) approximately 1 mile where you will see the Anderson Civic Center on your right. The cemetery is on your left, although it is hidden from view at this angle of approach. Make a quick U turn at the traffic light and come back approximately 100 yards. Turn right at the sign identifying the "Anderson County Recycling and Educational Center" and then look immediately your left. Observe a long white picket fence near a covered picnic area. The cemetery is adjacent to the picnic structure. A single monument, with multiple plaques honors those buried in the Anderson County Home Cemetery by noting their name and date of death.
