Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson/1580 Surname: Leavell, Walker, Busby ------------------------- I have some Leavell's in my family line . Does John L. Leavell or Mary Ann Walker Leavell sound like any of your linr.
The following household # 232 is found on the 1820 Census, Jackson Co., Ga. GIDEON SHOCKLEY 1 male 10 and under 16 1 male 16 to 18 2 males 18 and under 26 1 male 45 and over 1 female 0-10 1 female 10 and under 15 1 female 16 and under 26 1 female 45 and over William Shockely was in Key's tax district in 1804 and in 1805, and he, Gidion and Thomas Sr. were listed in the lottery. In 1820, there were two men, William and Robert (Nos. 590, 591) whose names appear to be Shockley or Shorley. Benjamin Shockely married in Greene County, Ga., Dec. 28, 1819, Patsy Gatlin and in 1827, Patsy Shockely (husband absent) and Gabriel R. Shockley, appeared in the lottery list. Benjamin, John, Jonathan and Thomas were in Greene County's 1820 census. The family was in the part of Pittsylvania County, Va., that became Franklin County, from 1767, and in the 1790's, in Pendleton District, SC. I know this is not what you asked for, but it was all I could find. A. Deason Smith SC
Chuck.. When I went to school in MS. My grandmother told me to look up the Leavells.. I couldn't find them. Years later my first cousin ran into William Faulkner when he was at the U. of VA. Faulkner asked about my family.. For years I searched for the connection with Leavells and with Faulkner. As it turned out. There were seventeen Leavell brothers... (Originally from SC) ..They were all Baptist ministers and they were raised next door to Faulkner (the author)... My family in Anderson were ardent Baptist.. I think one many years ago may have been connected to Anderson College but am not certain of that.. A Mrs. Osborne ran a boarding house in Anderson. I am certain that would be in 1920s. Mr. Rutledge Osborne settled in Orangeburg. He is dead now.. Would be late 90's or 100.. In Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward Angel he bases a bit of his book on that boarding house. It made people very angry at the time.. Wolfe would visit Anderson and stay at that boarding house.. He may have been related.. I am not kin to this family.. I just have a good memory for little things like this.. I was quite fond of Mr. Rut Osborne as he was known in Orangeburg. ----- Original Message ----- From: Phyllis <fryon@pbtcomm.net> To: <SCANDERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 18, 2000 12:45 AM Subject: [SCANDERS] Bud Osborne > Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries > Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson/1572 > > Surname: Osborne > ------------------------- > > All that I know is that Bud Osborne was married to Jessie Allen and that > their son O.C. is my gfather. Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson/1579 Surname: osborne ------------------------- Phyllis, Thanks for the quick reply! Actually, maybe I can help you if your are still interested in the Osborne line. Bud Osborne was my grand-uncle. Your grandfather and my mother were 1st cousins so I think that makes us 1st cousins at some remove. You and my 2 daughters would be 2d cousins? If you are not familiar with it, you might want to get a copy of Harold Travis Parker's "Pioneers of Hart Co, Georgia." You can get it through the inter-library loan program of your local library. While it has a fair number of errors in it, it is a good starting place. There is a detailed section on the William Osborne family which includes your family line and mine. There is at least one Revolutionary War patriot in the line (John Osborne of Amelia Co. VA, who was at Gilford Courthouse and the seige at Yorktown, according to Parker) Also, if you haven't seen it, I posted a bunch of stuff from the cemetery at Reed Creek Baptist Church. Lots of Osborne's there, including Bud and his wife Jesse. Off the top of my head I don't remember if your grandfather O.C. was buried there. Go to usgenweb.org click on the Tombstone Project, Click on Georgia, Click on Hart Co. By the way, "Bud" was a nickname and my mother says she never heard him called anything else either. They were always "Uncle Bud and Aunt Jes." I think he was Coleman Osborne. If so, your grandfather may have been junior. I didn't know that they were divorced. Would be interested in any details of that, and I'll ask my mother if she knows anything. I'm going to send her this whole chain of postings that your original query started. I can also send you what I have, I can give you my mother's phone number in Atlanta, or I can go away! Are you still in touch with Gina Scott? Do you think she would be interested in any of this? I never got to know anything about the Osborne family because my gmother and gfather divorced when my mother was a child. Sorry that I can't help any more than this. I need to get in touch with my mother so that she can tell me more. Thanks, Phyllis
Posted on: Anderson County, SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Anderson/1571 Surname: Martin, McClinton ------------------------- Just in case anyone is related to them I found notices of the deaths of two Anderson county Confederate soldiers--George Martin, Co. C, Palmetto Sharpshooters and Sgt. William H. McClinton, Co. G, 2nd SC Rifles --in the Anderson (SC) Intelligencer. They died away from home during the war and the notices appeared some time after their deaths, so if they are your missing ancestors I can tell you what happened to them.

Elaine, Your message is very interesting. My William H. Stephenson was born in 1817 in SC and was married to Salina C. Browning who was born in Dekalb County, Georgia in 1830, quite a coincidence. As far as I can determine, William was living with Salina in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, in 1860. He joined the 24th Alabama Infantry Regiment in July of 1861 from Tallapoosa County. Now I wander if my William had two wives? If you find any more info on this matter please let me know and I will do likewise. Charles R.
