I don't believe that Anderson was ever part of Franklin Co. Penningtons that I know of were from Newberry, SC.. They came down from PA and Neck of Virginia. Abraham, Issac and Jacob were three of their names. They married Cannons and Evins/Evans.. Abraham was the father. Is this the Penningtons you seek. There were many, many Penningtons. Barry; Thanks for the tips. I have planned to check out the book on Elbert County for a while but have not done so. I eventually will. This "John Skelton of Georgia," sounds interesting. I can remember my dad and grandpa McAlister, in telling some of their stories from the past, talk about the Skeltons and "The Old Skelton Place," referring to a family homestead, and I know it was in the Iva-Starr area, but that's all I know. I'll need to check out this one also. Thanks again. Jim McAlister Nelson, Va.

None of the names you mentioned are familiar. Here are two suggestions that might be helpful. "John Skelton of Georgia,", by Col. John Skelton (USAF, Ret)contains some significant information on other Skelton's that he found while doing his research, some of whom are in SC, in or near the Anderson Co. area. "The Official History of Elbert County, 1790-1935" by John McIntosh has info on several Clark families in Elbert Co. GA, none of which seem to be in my line, but may be in yours. Both of these books are probably available from your local library through the inter-library loan program. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. Barry Clark Fredericksburg, VA

John Baylis Clarke, Sr. born c1791 in SC is my biggest brick wall. I would love to know who his parents were. A Jane Clarke was living with him in the Anderson SC 1850 census listed as being born in 1777. She was probably his mother or possibly stepmother. Both John and Jane state on the 1850 census that they were born in SC, but in the 1860 census, Jane states that she was born in NC. With each census, Jane got younger so she was probably born before 1777. John's wife Jennie Sammons was from Greenville Dist. John shows up in Anderson at least by the 1830s as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He bought his first lots in the town of Anderson in 1836 from Daniel Brown. J. B. Clarke, as he called himself, served on the Anderson Town Council from 1845 to 1855. He died in 1855, but I have not been able to find his obituary. His son J.B. Clarke, Jr, his son-in-law Jesse R. Smith, A. M. Holland, and E. F. Murrah signed his estate Bond. I don't know his connection to the last two men. John's son John Baylis Clarke, Jr. married Martha Nevitt, daughter of William Miles Nevitt and was a tailor in Anderson as was their son Elias Lake Clark who was my ggrandfather. These Clarkes in Anderson spelled their name with an "e" at the end. When my line moved to Union, SC, the "e" was dropped. Does anyone know of a Clarke/Clark in SC who had a wife named Jane who may have been born in NC?. If any of this sounds familiar to you , please contact me. I would welcome any clues!!
