I found the following in the minutes for the Anderson Co. Court of General Sessions. Harvin Vandiver (b. 1804) was a Baptist preacher, son of the Rev. John Vandiver. This D. K. Breazeale was likely b. 1834, son of Williamson Breazeale. All the witnesses lived in the Belton area of Anderson County. My question is: who was murdered? kimwilson@mail.utexas.edu ----------- SCDAH #AN 429, Anderson Co. SC, Sessions Journal, 1859-74, 29 May 1872, State vs. Wm. M. Davenport and Harvin Vandiver, Indictment murder. (Original indictment also included David K. Breazeale and Robert Vandiver.) State's wits: W. S. Norris, Z. D. Chamblee, E. K. Pepper, W. L. Davis, E. C. Chamblee, M. E. Mitchell, Agustin Breazeale, Hiram Greenlee, Daniel Brown (col.), V. H. Breazeale, L. B. Meeks, Benson Jordan, Elijah Griffin, John Griffin, W. A. Watson, Dr. E. M. Brown. "The defense offers no testimony." McGowan and Moore, attys for Vandiver, J. C. C. Featherston, atty for Wm. M. Davenport. 30 May 1872, both found guilty, sentenced to hang on 17 Jan. 1873.

Vandiver, _History of Anderson County_, p. 42: "One of the negro members [of Big Creek Baptist church] named Caesar was rather an unusual character. He was a preacher of considerable influence. He had been a slave who saved enough to buy his own freedom, and later bought his brother. The land just above the place where Rush and Vandiver's planing mill once stood, was owned by Caesar. He was buried in a field just in the rear of the old Williamston Female College buildings." ------- 1) Does anyone know where the old Rush and Vandiver's planing mill once stood? 2) Is Caesar's grave marked behind the old Williamston Female College buildings? 3) Does anyone know which surname Caesar took, or the name of his brother? Thank you, Kim
Everyone should know that the mail below is some kind of hoax. I sent my familyhistory.com spam letter to the email listed below (abuse@prodigy.com) and it was returned because this is not a valid email address. This should not have been posted to a genealogy site to begin with. I am very confused as to why the sender posted this spam. It appears that several of the Rootsweb email groups have been getting this. Please do not pass it on yourself to anyone. They have been reported to various State Attorney General's Office on computer fraud, but it is hard to catch up with them. Originally the "company" linked to free information sites and placed the pages in "frames" so that it looked like it was their own work. Customers paid for that information. The scam, now, is paying for the free information links and then they "move" frequently and leave their paid-up customers without services. 3) Post these same instructions on any other lists today so that Prodigy has a better chance of finding the spammers. -- Linda Emerson Coordinator - Union Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/townships/Union.htm ==== PAERIE Mailing List ==== Welcome to the PA-Erie Mailing List ============================== Visit Ancestry's Library - The best collection of family history learning and how-to articles on the Internet. http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library --part1_f3.82505b6.27da58ac_boundary--
