Hi Herb, I talked to my father-in-law to see if he had heard the names you mentioned. He had not heard of them, but that does not mean they are not related in some way. How old are they? If they are living today and he does not know them, then I doubt they would be related. But if they are older, and he may have not known them, they may be. You see where I am coming from I am sure. My ggggrandmother, Rebecca Haynes [wife of SP Dunlap, Pascal Wilson's brother], was the daughter of "Nathaniel Haynes and Jane Smith." That is all I know about them. I have been able to turn up nothing solid on Nathaniel, and, with a common name like Jane Smith, don't think I am very likely to find her until I find him! I have, however been able to find one mention of a Nathaniel Haynes, son of Sheriff Haynes & Mary Tatum, born in Pickens County. After 1850 that family disappears from the Pickens Census. Because many of my other SC ancestors were from Anderson, I think it likely that the Haynes moved into Anderson. I would like to check the census records to make sure, though. How is the best way to do this? I know you mentioned a look-up volunteer once before; is there some way I can check them online myself, since they aren't available through the Anderson site? I don't know that this would help at all but I have reason to believe [not sure though] that Nathaniel's middle name was Tarrant. Thanks so much for anything you can help with! Rachel

Somewhere I got him as born in 1843. I think on a tombstone. But all indications he was born in 1856 according to the census and Obit and these mails below seem to match that one. The census shows her as "Amelia", and at that time (1880) my great grandfather was less than a year old. It states that Amelia was age 20 and Paul age 50. An old family bible states that Permelia had brothers Wade, George, and John and a sister whose name starts with "M". The only Permelia (or Amelia) I have found so far who would have been about age 10 in the 1870 census is in a family in Tennessee, and those sibling names don't match. I note that Wade Hampton Patterson had a son O.C. Amelia named one of her sons O.C. I also note that Wade had a son J.D. Well, a J.D. Patterson signed on my grandmother's marriage application. I can find so many similarities but nothing concrete. I also note that Wade had a daughter Amanda who married a Gillespie, but I don't think the age would be right for my Amelia. My gggmother, Clarissa, wife of the Rev. David Lorenzo WHITAKER (1823-1906), has been eluding me for 19 years. Just about everything I've seen on her gives her maiden name as Pruet or Prewitt, but Dr. Prewitt, the Pruett/Prewitt one name researcher, never heard of her. (I corresponded with him about her.) I have been told by a relative that the relative who listed her as a PRUET in a family notebook in the late 1800s or early 1900s must have copied down her maiden name incorrectly. I've combed Anderson county records looking for her maiden name and/ or parents -- no luck. About the only other possibility is that she was, indeed, from Georgia. The first opportunity I will have to check the Georgia Archives will be in December. (I'm a first semester grad student at Clemson. I don't have time for any trips to Atlanta on weekdays during classes.) It is extremely likely that she was either Native American or had a significant amount of Native American ancestry. In addition to family pictures, this would explain some odd events in the family history since she married my gggfather in 1843. David was a Methodist lay preacher and carpenter who was assigned to Ruhamah Methodist Church for several years in the 1800s. Clarissa is buried in that cemetery, as well as their two daughters who died young, and one of her grandsons, as well as her descendents who married into the MCGUKINs. Ruhamah Methodist Church is on the shores of Lake Hartwell: it's off that last turn on US29S before the boat ramp. I live in Easley. Elizabeth Whitaker

Thanks Donna! This will give me a much better start than I did have. BTW, how do you have all of the death notices of the Patterson's from Anderson. Especially L.T.'s? He died in 1967. I am newer at this than you are. I am sure you have gone through the obits at the library. The one that got me was you finding Winnie Lou Ward's. I suppose you use something like the find thing in Word, etc. I would really like to know. Thanks again.
