Hello, I have Mitchell and Caldwell ancestors from Anderson, Abbeville etc. Was wondering if any of these are related. I thought they might. Joy http://www.freegendata.com/cgibin/1/jump.cgi?ID=1532&afscrc=1 Mitchell Family "The story I have on Sarah Shipley Mitchell is from Baylor's Washington County, Kentucky History. "In the early summer of 1790, the families of Robert Mitchell, David McChord and others, set off for Kentucky. In the Mitchell group there were Robert and his aged mother, Mary Caldwell Mitchell, his wife, Naomi, and their children, John, Daniel, Robert, and Sarah. Another Mitchell group was that of Adam Mitchell, brother of Robert, and his family. While the emigrant caravan was yet some miles from Crab Orchard in Lincoln County, they were attacked by Indians. Naomi Mitchell was mortally wounded. Her husband stood by and succeeded in driving off the savages, thus preventing her from being scalped. The other members of the party scattered. Daniel Mitchell and his sister, Sarah, were together. Coming to a log spanning a small stream, Daniel urged his sister to cross over, but she, being afraid, hesitated. The young man then sprang onto the log to show that it was safe to cross and bade his sister to follow him. Still the girl hesitated and by that time several of the Indians had caught up with the fugitives. The redskins siezed the girl and Daniel seeing that he could not save his sister, fled to save his own life. After some time spent in pillaging the camp of the whites, the Indians left, carrying with them the captured Sarah Mitchell. As soon as the escaped emigrants learned that the Indians had departed, they returned to the camp site. Robert Mitchell came carrying his wounded wife. None of the others had suffered injury. slowly and sadly the company moved on to the fort at Crab Orchard. Very soon after reaching the fort, Naomi Mitchell died. A party of men was raised to pursue the Indians in hope of rescuing Sarah but after travelling many miles and not catching up with the redskins, the party returned to the fort. For several days the bereaved emigrants tarried at Crab Orchard. The McChords then proceeded to Madison County and the Mitchells to Mercer and Nelson Counties. There is a tradition in the Berry family that the family of Robert Mitchell spent some time with the family of Richard Berry, Sr. in Nelson (now Washington) County. The aged mother of Robert Mitchell probably went to live with her brother, Robert Caldwell, of Mercer, and it is said she remained in his home until the day of her death some years later. The traditionary records are somewhat uncertain concerning the death of Robert Mitchell. One story has it that he lost his life by drowning in swollen Clinch River while in pursuit of the Indians who had killed his wife and stolen his daughter. From another source we learn that it was a year or two later that he was drowned in Clinch River while making a return trip to North Carolina. Whatever may have been the manner of his death, we do know that he was dead by the year 1793 when he is mentioned as 'Robert Mitchell, deceased' in a letter from his aged mother to Governor Isaac Shelby. In 1795, the year after Daniel Mitchell married, word came to him that his sister, Sarah had been located in Canada. He went to that country, secured his sister's release, and brought her back to Washington County. Sarah was placed in the home of Richard Berry, Sr. to be the companion of her cousin, Nancy Hanks." Some descendants, Robert Mitchell Thompson, said that it was due to the treaty by Anthony Wayne with the Pottawatomies that Sarah was released. Florence Thompson Lovejoy wrote that it was the Wayne Treaty also. I don't know if this has been researched or not." The Nancy Hanks referred to is, of course Abraham Lincoln's mother, and one branch of the family was instrumental in disproving the claims often made by his opponents that Lincoln was illegitimate (a matter of some importance at the time). I've always enjoyed the story of Sarah Mitchell, which my grandmother told me as a small child-- thank you for placing it on your page! -- Sarah Shaw Tatounova *********** http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/2064/ - my home page <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~indian/index.htm">Return to Indian Captives Main Page</A>

I don't know exactly when the road stopped being used. This area is currently in the location of Rupert Scruggs Road, off of Gregg Shoals Road, which turns off of Barnes Station Road. Also, the Pine Grove Church Road also turns off of Gregg Shoals Road. The former Diamond Springs Hotel was located on the old Bowman Ferry Road and was built by John W. Brown, my g-g-grandfather, around 1840. It was popular for it's medicinal springs back before the Civil War. John W. Brown's home was also located on Bowman Ferry Road, and other homes that were on these same roads include the Manning family home (the same family that some of their children drowned in the Harper's Ferry accident in 1920), and over on Pine Grove Church Road, the George Perry Pettigrew Home and the George W. Brown home (my g-grandfather). Does anyone have any photos, drawings, or maps of anything in this area from the time frame (1850-1935). Please let me know. (I have Mr. Carlisle's drawing of the Hotel from the book published on Abbeville Co. history). Thank you! Joanne B. Revell

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hcB.2ACE/337.1.1 Message Board Post: The following from a long-time researcher of the Van Davis ancestry who was acquainted with Laura Mentzel: Vann Davis is not a descendant of Morgan David even though some people have tried to make him a descendant. Laura Mentzel researched Vann for a long number of years and before her death still wasn't sure who his father was but was certain it wasn't Reason/(Rezin) Davis. She told me she was almost certain that Vann's immigrant would have entered the U.S. in Virginia. In 1976, Laura published "Davis Families of the Savannah River Valley" in which references were made to a Reason/(Rezin) Davis as possibly the father of Vann. This information was included in the first 35 pages of her book. If you examine the book closely you see a definite division between the first 35 pages and page 36 and the remainder of the book. The first 35 pages contain information that her older sister Ethel Updike had accumulated for the book. When Ethel couldn't prove definitely that Vann was in the Revolutionary War she dropped the Davis research when she did find her Tate ancestor was a Revolutionary soldier. She was anxious to get into the D.A.R. After a few years, Laura picked up the Davis material and started researching the Vann Davis family for a book and included Ethel's first 35 pages without documenting any of it. When I questioned the book, I told her that we could re-print it and sell lots of copies. She very emphatically said, "NO, don't ever re-print that book, it has too many errors". The Reason Davis assumption was one of the errors. Vann's son Hezekiah Davis from whom I descend was a Revolutionary soldier with documentation. It is highly improbable that his grandfather was a Revolutionary soldier when his father Vann wasn't. Too many amateur genealogists have taken the material in that book to be the "gospel" in genealogy and have gone in every direction with it including Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy in their Davis lines. Now I am from the south and a great admirer of Jefferson Davis but cannot claim being related to him as much as I would like to but most Davis lines I have read about mak! e that claim. It is an impossibility, when you study Jefferson's family history there was no way he could have had a lot of relatives. Laura said there were even errors in Harry Alexander's book about Davises. Laura spent many months of time researching in the LDS Library where the best sources were and said there was no way Vann could be related to Harry Alexander's Davises from PA. She said our mistake was publishing her book without documentation on those first 35 pages. I am an amateur but from my study of Harry Alexander's book and Jefferson Davis' genealogy I have to agree with Laura. Vann made a will which was filed in Anderson County, South Carolina. In that will he names all twelve of his children. We who descend from those twelve children have that base to go back too but we are still looking for the true father of Vann Davis who married Susannah Cary.
