Dear Lister Members, Does anyone recognize this Carpenter/Timmerman and Carpenter/Booth connection that I have put together from census and cemetery books? I think that this John M. Carpenter b. c. 1833-35 might have been the brother of my great grandfather, Ed/Edmund/Edward Carpenter who married Emma Frances Whitlock about 1884. Emma Frances Whitlock was a great granddaughter of Winfrey Whitlock and Elizabeth Booth. Ed Carpenter's brother John Carpenter was one of four men tried and acquitted of the murder of Booker Toney in October, 1879. In the Affray in Edgefield Village in August, 1878, Benjamin Booth was severely wounded and his brother, James Booth, and Benjamin's son, Tom Booth, were killed. Ed Carpenter was called and testified as a witness. These families lived around the Trenton area and the Pine Log House and in a southerly direction along the general area of present day Highway 25. Which daughter of John M. Carpenter from the 1880 census married Jesse Timmerman and went by the name of Annie? How does a stepson in 1880 with the last name of Williams for a previous marriage for Frances fit into this picture. Was John Carpenter married to two different women with the first name of Frances. Some of the dates don't exactly match. Are there some really big mistakes in the census data for these families that have me confused? A John and Frances Carpenter appear in the descendents of John Hatcher in an equity suit in the early 1870's against Rice and Susan Swearingen. I have worked out that Frances might have been the daughter of W. J. Turner by his first marriage to Christa Hatcher, a daughter of John Hatcher and Christian/a [_?_]. Susan [_?_][_?_]Hatcher Swearingen might have been the grandmother of Emma Frances Whitlock above. Susan seems to have been married or living with Alfred Hatcher in 1850 and 1860. Yet the equity suit is about Alfred Hatcher having no children and according to John Hatcher's will Alfred's land was suppose to go back to John, Jr.'s heirs. Rice and Susan Swearingen were living on it and would not give it up. Who was Frances Carpenter age 12 living with W. J. Turner in 1870??? Somehow some of this early information does not exactly match up. According to information to a now deceased great aunt b. c. 1907 a John Carpenter died in 1915. Where is he buried and who did he marry? Any information on his descendents would be very much appreciated. Does anyone know anything about the William R. Timmerman listed as a brother to Jesse Timmerman in the 1880 census. One William H/Henry Timmerman is supposed to have married P. Josephine Horn and lived and are buried in the Grovetown, Columbia County, Georgia Cemetery? Or was this another William Timmerman? Josie Horn appears to have been a descendent of Mary Booth, sister of Elizabeth Booth Whitlock listed above. Mary Booth/e married Elijah Horn according to an early Horne family Bible whose location is now unknown. OLD LANGLEY CEMETERY "Township of LANGLEY SC, Hwy #421, take Piney Hieghts Rd, cemetery is 4/10 mile on right in dense undergrowth and large trees, and is spread over a large area. We found very few graves swuares that had been attended in several years. We know we don't have all graves listed because of so much undergrowth. Vandalism is very evident, many broke stones, and some even moved from base to other areas." "There are several entrances to cemetery from Piney Hieghts Rd., we started at first and copied inscriptions in sections and tried to keep grave squares together. Many of the swuares had a good masonry person to enclose squares. Due to vandals and tree roots, many are geginning fall, or break up." Page 77 About 24-30 graves, some unmarked, down the list.
