Dear List Members, The message below was "gatewayed" from the HATCHER MESSAGE BOARD at Rootsweb.com to the Hatcher surname list at Rootsweb.com. I am cross posting my reply to the poster, the Hatcher list and the Edgefield, Aiken, and Barnwell List. I have done some research on the Hatchers of Edgefield District, South Carolina, as well as other connecting and neighboring families in Edgefield, Aiken, and Barnwell. I think the poster can probably eliminate the John Hatcher of the 14th SC Infantry as being his John Hatcher from Anderson County, S. C. I think the John Hatcher of the 14th SC. Inf. was probably the same John Hatcher b.c. 1840 who I think was a sister to my ancestor, Frances {_?_}Hatcher b.c. 1842 d.c. 1876-8 m. James Whitlock, Jr. c. 1864, and that they were not actually Hatchers and may have been children of Susan{?}. This John Hatcher may have died in the Civil War. I would appreciate any information you have on him. On the 1850 and 1860(House #202)census of Edgefield District, S. C. Frances and John Hatcher are living in the household of Alfred Hatcher in the area of the Pine Log House/Trenton. However, a 1870's Edgefield County, S. C. Equity Court case claims that Alfred Hatcher d. c. 1868 and has no children and that by the 1870 census Susan {?}had married Rice Swearingen. I have Karol Whyte's Swearingen book and I can't identify this Rice Swearingen. If Alfred Hatcher died in 1868 without any children, then who were all of these people living with him on the census. Alfred Hatcher is suppose to have been married to Frances Swearingen but I have conflicting dates one c. 1821 and one c. 1841. Another surname for Frances and John Hatcher m ight be something similar to McCrady. No spelling and sound is "fussy" at best. I know that at least some of the companies of the 14th SC infantry were raised from the Edgefield area. I don't remember exactly which ones they were or if all of the companies were from the Edgefield area. I do know that Company H 14th SC Infantry was raised from Barnwell because my double ancestor, R. I. Manning Toole, was from Barnwell and he served in Company H 14th SC Inf. He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia. Any further information on brother and sister, John and Frances Hatcher, and the names of their biological parents would be appreciated. Surnames: Hatcher Classification: Military Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Ech.2ACEB/1337 Message Board Post: I am trying to find the ties between a Hatcher of whom I'm a direct decendent and a Hatcher in the Civil War. My ancestor is John D. Hatcher, born in 1824 in Anderson, SC and died in 1870 in Anderson, SC. His father was Daniel Hatcher and his mother was Ellen Nelly. I've searched and found 7 John Hatchers who fought in the Civil War all in South Carolina. For the 6th SC Cavalry, 2nd SC Artillary, 1st SC State Troopers, 2nd SC Infantry, 14th SC Infantry, 19th SC Infantry and the 2nd SC Rifles. I am unable to find enough information for the John Hatchers that were listed in the Civil War to tie them to my ancestor. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
