Could someone please tell me about the procedures of the probate court there in Aiken County? I live in Kennesaw, GA, which is about 4 hours away. My mother's family has been from the Aiken, Barnwell, Allendale counties for generations. I needed to obtain a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate. They were married in Warrenville on Oct. 4, 1923. Since this record is not at the archives, but is at the probate court of Aiken County, I followed instructions and called them. I was told by a very nice lady to send in a letter giving all the pertinent information, $5, and a stamped and self addressed envelope. This is what I did. A few days later I received my envelope back, but instead of the certificate, inside was my $5 and a terse note saying basically that they did not have staff for doing "genealogy research" and I would have to come there. I'm a little confused about why I was told one thing on the phone as if this was a normal request and that they had set procedures for handling it and then receiving a letter stating that it wasn't done.
