One contact, Helen Harrell believes him to be the son of THOMAS SHAW and ELIZABETH LEWIS [Helen Harrell] His death date has been given as occuring in 1804 and in 1805. Month and day the same??? *Absolute SPECULATION. there is a Stephen Shaw in the 1860 Edgefield Co. census just 7 houses from David L. Shaw. Wonder if he is an uncle. These are some Goode notes: GOODE: [Source: Early Settlers of Alabama as posted by Audrey Pool] "John GOODE, of Barbadoes (son of Richard GOODE, of Cornwall, Eng.), born about 1620, went to Barbadoes about 1643; there married Frances MACKERNESS* and removed to "Whitby", James River, four miles from Richmond, VA. (before 1660) where his wife soon died, leaving son, Samuel. He married (II) Anne BENNET, who left twelve children. Samuel, the son, born in Barbadoes before 1660, (will 1734), mentioned in Henrico Records, married Martha JONES, and had seven children. Of these the third son: Phillip (b. 1700-20) went, through Mecklenburg County, to Edgefield, SC about 1760; had three sons." Samuel, of Edgefield District, had son: John Goode of Abbeville district, SC (b. 1760-70); married Ann FREEMAN, and lived near Cambridge, scarce a vestige of which remains. It is near Ninety-Six. This name would seem to indicate a connection with the Mackerness Goode of Edgefield Co., SC M'Kerness GOODE is listed as having served under General George Washington in the French & Indian Wars [Source: The Old Free State (Lunenburg County, VA), The French and Indian Wars] He is listed on the marriage record of his dau, Sally M. GOODE, 21 November 1788 to John MC QUIE as "dau of Mackerness GOODE. Surety: Langston BACON. Ref: Charlotte County Marriage Records, page 124. "Pp. 28-30. 13 Aug 1793 MACKERNESS GOODE to GARLAND GOODE, both of Edgefield Co, SC for love & affection, gives 363 acres on Ninety Six Creek on South side of Saluda River. S/MACKERNESS (MC) GOODE. Wit: John HAMILTON, Lewis MATHEWS, PAUL HOLLOWAY, who swore by oath 5 Jun 1794 before John MOORE, J.P., etc...." --------------------------- I also have worked with Larry Scott on some Arthur/Coursey connections and have some early Arthur info., but not back as far as the William Arthur of the above deed. Does anyone have information on William Arthur and his family? My Arthur info. begins with Michael Arthur Sr. b. 1818. Larry Scott and several others have contributed to the desc. of several of the children.
