    1. DEANS & questions from the 1900 CENSUS, Greenwood Co, SC
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. I am having the most fun going thru census records for 1900 right now. Our local library subscribed to Heritage Quest, and with my library card number, I can now get on their site thru my library from home. It is slow, with my old computer and phone line hookup, and use it only after about 9 pm so as not to tie up my phone, but it is fun finding all these folks. Last night I ran the search of Greenwood Co, 1900 for all DEANS, race White. I Found some I can and some I cannot place. Hope some of you Dean researchers can help. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net ------------------------------------- All from CENSUS: 1900 Greenwood Co, SC. p.351B, Brooks township, hh#63/63 Fannie Dean, head, F W 5/1875, 25 Single, SC SC SC Rufus Dean, brother, M W 7/1870, 30, single, SC SC SC I believe the brother Rufus Dean to be the Rufus Dean, son of Henry R. and Georgia McTyier. Note the birthdate given in the census matches the birthdate of the Lebanon Cemetary, Plains, Sumter Co, GA cem record sent me by Tom Sheffield HOWEVER, I don't have a sister Fannie???? I find no Fannie as a wife of his brothers either. Do you know who she is? Her birthdate is in conflict with that of Ernest Marion Dean b. November 22, 1875, so that makes me think she might not be a blood sister, since both could not be born within the time period. 2. Yes, Billie, a young lady named Sarah is transcribing the basics for the funeral home. The new owners are not into genealogy and will not buy a new microfilm reader. She is doing a great service but I wish that she would get pertinent notes and descriptions of the deceased. She does not plan to at this time. Still, she is a doll for doing so. Yvonne In a message dated 3/15/2005 1:10:35 PM Eastern Standard Time, tjones@camden.net writes: >From what I hear, after having used Elliotts several years ago and getting some wonderful information, their microfilm reader is no long in service, and they are not planning to get another one. So all those wonderful records are just sitting there. Someone wrote a while back that they had gotten permission to start transcribing them, if I am remembering correctly. Billie Jones

    2. I did several searches for "Harry Porter" while waiting for a response. The name was evidently popular. 1. New information on James R. Coursey b. 1873 d. 1942 [Mathis/Matthews/
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. I called the Elliott Funeral Home, Augusta Ga, today, and thank goodness, the person who answered was someone who was interested in genealogy and research. I gave her the information that I had on the name and date of death of the James R. Coursey that ya'll are probably tired of hearing about and she checked out the information they had and called me back this afternoon, giving me the following information: James R. Coursey b. March 10, 1873, Edgefield Co, SC married Mary McClendon Coursey **father: John W. Coursey b. Edgefield Co, SC **mother: Sallie Matthew, b. Edgefield Co, SC had a brother William Coursey. I hunted thru my FTM file but the Sallie Matthews that I have does not work here. I have several other Sarahs etc but w/o husbands. so one of them might work. Then I checked some other info. I had gotten from the Harley Funeral Home records several years ago and found this: William Prescott Coursey of Keesley Dr. Greenwood b 11/20/1877 d. 12/9/1952 12:30 am at home. Father John Coursey Mother Sallie Mathews Brd. Memorial Gardens.[Harley, Book 14 p. 17] NOTE THE PARENTS... so this seems to be the brother William mentioned in the Elliott funeral home records and in the obit of James R. Coursey. So now we know this family group: 1. John W. Coursey b. EC m Sallie Matthews b. EC [Harley Funeral Home, Book 14 p. 17; Elliott's Funeral Home Records] 2. James R. Coursey b. 3/10/1873 Edgefield Co, SC, d. 6/1/1942 m. Mary McClendon (b. 1885 d. 1946) both d. Augusta GA ,brd West View Cem. [Augusta Chronicle Obit; Elliott Funeral Home Records] 2. William Prescott Coursey of Keesley Dr. Greenwood b 11/20/1877 d. 12/9/1952 12:30 am at home. Father John Coursey Mother Sallie Mathews Brd. Memorial Gardens [Harley, Book 14 p. 17] Please identify Memorial Gardens for me??? Connie, can you check the Index-Journal for an obit for William Prescott above. But can you believe it, I still cannot connect them in any census record!! I guess I just have not gotten the right spelling of the 1880 census. Will have to work on this more. I did find this one that MIGHT be William P. Coursey, but don't know for sure: 1910 Collier Township, Edgefield Co, SC p. 24B, hh#206/206 William P. I have found the names confused before. Will look for William P. Coursey in Death certs. next week. 2. You don't mention your husband's grandmother's name. What was it? Also, do you have her death date? Do you know when Daisy Bell and Hubert died? I will see if I can find anything in the Chronicle if you give me a little more information. Porter and Daisy Belle Porter better known as Fairy Belle (Owens) Porter. We are trying to find out if he died at an early age and he was never spoken of. Unfortunately my husband's Grandmother died about 15 years ago. Please help somebody because this is a mystery. Thank you. Grace

    3. From what I hear, after having used Elliotts several years ago and getting some wonderful information, their microfilm reader is no long in service, and they are not planning to get another one. So all those wonderful records are just sitting there. Someone wrote a while back that they had gotten permission to start transcribing them, if I am remembering correctly. I have census records of his family in Aiken Co, SC and then Richmond Co, GA. and more information on his children, and some grandchildren, but cannot attach him to the Coursey line of Aiken, Edgefield, Saluda, Greenwood counties. Since he names a child Euel, who predeceased him in 1931, I believe him to be of my line of Courseys decended from Ewell Coursey b. 1818, probably Edgefield Dist, SC. married twice 1) Unproven 2) Elizabeth Unknown. My maternal grandfather and mother were of this early Ewell Coursey line.
