Don, Send me your mailing address, and I will send you a map of the townships of Aiken County, including Millbrook. I know that there was a substantial community of African Americans, including my grandmother's family of Gants, living on Whiskey Road during the 1910 US Census. I believe that my next step is to look at subsequent censuses to see what happened to families who lived around my grandmother in 1910. Also, see if Millbrook Township is used on subsequent censuses. If not, when did it stop being used and why. Lastly, maybe there is a department in the Aiken County City Hall that can assist me. > > Don Harris > > > > ==== SCAIKEN Mailing List ==== > NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political > announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, > etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. > Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett kathleenburnett@earthlink.net > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZcB.2ACE/359.2 Message Board Post: Don - I imagine you've seen this, which must have been put up by a cousin of yours? http://home.earthlink.net/~dhsankofa/aikconn.html I've lived in Aiken all but 2 years of my life. I looked at the map mentioned in the reply above, and the Millbrook division shown on that map looks like all of south Aiken and more - a really large area. Whiskey Road is Highway 19, starting near downtown Aiken and going south to New Ellenton. Old Whiskey Road branches off of Whiskey Road, to the southwest, just as you enter New Ellenton. I haven't found a reference to 'Millbrook Township' yet, but there's a pretty concentrated area near the intersection of Hwy 19 (Whiskey Road) with 302 (Pine Log Road). In that area you find Millbrook Baptist Church, Millbrook Elementary School ( where I went), Millbrook Grocery, etc. I'd be willing to bet the township was in that area.
Has anyone surveyed the Cumbee Cemetery located (as per mapquest) on the South Edisto Golf Club, Lat: 33.731 Long:-81.656? If so, where is it printed? Thanks. Sara
Responce to Don Harris First, I always thought that Whiskey Road was along old Highway #1 and in the upper part of Aiken Co near the mill towns of Graniteville, Langley, Bath, Clearwater, etc. I have made a copy of a map at the Camden Archives and Museum, Camden SC entitled: SC. Minor Civil Divisions: Townships and School Districts. The Millbrook township is still there. But it is NOT along the run of Highway #1, so I may be off on my understanding of the location of Whiskey rd. I'd be interested in knowing the run of highway known as old Whiskey Rd. The Millbrook township looks like it would have been in BARNWELL County until 1870, when Aiken Co. was formed. It's Present location is estimated, based on that township map and a present county general highway map of Aiken Co. I would say that is begins a little west of Windsor and goes west toward New Ellenton. The southern part of the area is now the Savannah River Plant, owned by Dept of Defense. This Govt property covers a fairly large portion of south western corner of Aiken Co. That area was taken over by the gov't in the late 40s early 50s. My Dad went to work there in 1951. Churches that look like they would be in the area or close to it are: Rosemary Church, Ashley Grove Church, Union Branch Church, Talatha Church, Mt. Enon Church. The township may go as far up toward Aiken (city) as Monmorenci, but again, trying to figure it out without river boundaries, or other info. when comparing a small map to a large map of different scale, it is hard for me to pin-point its exact location. Thank you so much for your help. How do I go about getting a copy of the SC: Minor Divisions Map? On the 1910 US Census, there are notations made of Millbrook Township and Whiskey Road as the residences of my grandmother and many other families, mostly African American.
