While doing research on the 1840 and the 1850 census records some extra information can be obtained. If this is information you already know pay no attention. This is for the rest of you. I observed, while doing Alabama research, that the 1840 census has an extra page for counting Revolutionaries who are drawing a pension. The 1850, of course, is the first year that they counted the families by name. In many areas they also had a Mortality Schedule listing people who had died within the last year. Many slave names are sometimes to be found by name on that schedule.
