CHAPMAN of Anderson and Miss C.E. BROCK of Abbeville. ------ OBITUARY OF DAVID GREER DIed, May 13th, 1869 at his residence near Honea Path, David GREER, in the 76th year of his age. The deceased was a native of South Carolina and spent most of his life in the vicinity of his late residence. He was a man of a cheerful, contented disposition, not inclined to wander from place to place in search of wealth, but possessing a competency, he was content to sit still and enjoy it with his friends and neighbors. David Greer was endowed in a large degree with all the ordinary virtues that adorn humanity. As a farmer, he was thrifty, frugal and economical. As a neighbor he was kind, generous and social. In domestic enjoyment he was happy and cheerful and a good provider. As a citizen, he always took a deep interest in public affairs. As a Christian, he was sincere, humble and consistent in his walk. He was during his whole Christian life, a member of the Baker's Creek Baptist church where he had his first and last connection. He was an affectionate husband, a fond father and a kind master, as the staying of his freedman with him, fully proves. In all the duties of life, he acted in the fear of God; and after a lingering and painful decline, his useful life ended, in the humble hope through the grace of a glorious immortality. -------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, SEPTEMBER 24, 1869 DEATH OF MRS. SHILLITO We regret to annouce the death of Mr. Andrew W. SHILLITO, the well known and highly esteemed citizen, which occurred at his residence a few miles from the village on Wednesday last. He has risen from bed for the purpose of making a fire, when he fell insensible, and died before medical relief could reach him. Upon an examination by a Jury of Inquest before Mr. Robert Jones, Coroner, the cause of his death was ascertained to be a disease of the heart. He was in his seventy-sixth year and had retained his faculties unimpaired to the last. He was, in many respects, a remarkable man, and with powers of mind which if properly developed, might have made their mark in the world. An excellent mathematician, he was an admirable Surveyor, and was known throughout the district for his skill. A high minded, honorable man, he was universally esteemed, and leaves many relatives and friends to mourn his loss. The funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church by the Rev. James F. Gibert and the body was interred in the Upper Long Cane church yard. --------- ACCIDENTAL KILLING OF A FREEDMAN, Butler HASKELL We are indebted to Mr. Robert Jones for the particulars of the death of a freedman, Butler HASKELL, which occurred at Mr. R.H. Wardlaw's place on Lone Cane on the 23rd ult. from the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of another freedman, Johnson EVANS. They had both been engaged with a number of others in pulling fodder and when about to return home, Evans was requested by another to bring his gun which he had forgotton; and in drawing it though the bushes, he accidentally discharged it, and deposited the contents into the head of the deceased, who was standing some twelve paces distant. The Jury of Inquest found a verdict in accordance with the above stated facts. --------- SAD ACCIDENT We regret to announce the sad accident on Monday evening last, which resulted in the death of a young man, Mr. Richard TAYLOR, who lives in the upper part of the district. Soon after leaving the village he was thrown from his horse and falling upon his head received such injuries as to be entirely insensible. He was immediately removed to the Marshall House and was given all that medical skill could render, but to no avail. He lingered until Wednesday evening when he died. He was under age and unmarried and leaves a mother and brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. -------- OBITUARY OF ANNIE BAKER DIed, Sept. 23, 1869 of Typhoid Fever at the residence of her father-in-law near Lowndesville, S.C., Annie, wife of Albert T. BAKER and daughter of Esan and Delphia BROOKS. She was born in Edgefield county, on Dec. 16, 1846. She early felt there was a void in her heart nothing earthly could fill, and wisely she sought and found in God, the rest her soul desired and made a covenant by sacrifice with God and joined the Baptist church and consecrated her life to His service. During her short illness she often expressed her entire resignation to the will of God and with joy would exclaim, "Bless the Lord, oh, my soul". It is sad to know that one so loved in the associations in life, one, who gave so much of sunshine to her own family circle, has been taken away by death. On earth, her soul was but in the bud. She went to a fairer clime, that she might blossom. She leaves a devoted husband, an infant child, an aged mother, kind brothers and sisters and many friends to mourn her loss, which to her, is eternal gain. --------- BY ORDER OF THE PROBATE COURT, Abbeville County I will sell at public auction on Sale Day in November next, the real estate of Josiah ASHLEY, dec'd, comprising eighty-one acres, more or less, situated in said county, ajdoining lands of Joshua ASHLEY and John T. He had gone with his brother-in-law Dr. ORR to visit a patient, whom finding very ill, they remained all night. The deceased retired to bed at about 12 o'clock much indisposed and soon dropped to sleep. About two hours after, he was discovered dead, it is supposed from disease of the heart.
