My CLARK family - ALEXANDER CLARK and his wife AGNES McGAW - left the Abbeville area in 1805 and moved to Illinois. We are still in Illinois. The McGaw family moved to Preble County, Ohio. From what you say they may have gone to Ohio with the Pattersons. She is listing generations from Josiah McGaw and his daughter Sarah. I have Josiah McGaw's children with his first wife as Sarah, John, Catherine, and William. This is based on the 1850 Census of Holmes Co Mississippi (which is, or was, on-line). Sarah Red was a widow, and John McGaw was living with her so I assume he was her brother. The other two were living with Josiah and born before his marriage to Martha Devlin (Pressley). Martha Devlin had one son by her first husband, John Pressley. John E. Pressley was a Presbyterian minister in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, where he married his sister Martha Jane (Mattie) McGaw to H.P. Helper on 3 Sept. 1863. While Josiah McGaw's first wife is shown as Martha Russell, I have no proper source for her name. I would like to know who her parents were.     3. Minor correction, Martha Russell was Josiah's first wife. I would probably put her name in parentheses or something unless or until somebody can verify it, but the children's ages show that Josiah was married before Martha Devlin. They also had a brother Josiah Patterson according to Sarah McGaw's will. A message on the Abbeville board states that there were other siblings, probably including a sister Jane who married David Pressly. It also recommends the website http://englishamerica.home.att.net/spls/772sc004.htm#Free_Mason . If the site is still there, it shows the ship that supposedly brought Samuel Patterson to America.
